Defender rattle!
I’ve just taken delivery of a new 110 and am generally really pleased with it. I have a bad rattle from the passenger side door. I’ve had my passenger listen out for it and it seems to be coming from behind the door card itself. It also stops when you open the door slightly (at very low speeds). Has anyone else with a new car had these issues? Assume it’ll be fixed under warranty?I’d rather not have to drop it back in to the dealer so soon and sure they’ll think I’m being a pedant but it will slowly send me mad over time I’m sure! I was hoping it’d have bombproof build quality given the Reports of extensive testing done but I’m a bit disappointed tbh.

Screw what the dealer thinks, if there’s a fault take it back.

Sometimes if there’s a rattle in the door card it could be something simple like a loose speaker wire.

Its good to see the new Defender is maintaining its ancestral DNA - Tim has leaks, you've got rattles who's got a new one with an oil leak?

There’s definitely a bit of the old DNA in there! It hasn’t rained on mine yet so will be checking the seals as Tim pointed out.

I just know the dealer will have to pull the door apart to find it and even then probably won’t find it and maybe even make more rattles. The sound system is excellent though so might just have to turn up the volume to drown it out.

All in,really happy with the car but this has taken the shine off for sure. Recommend a thorough listen and test drive for anyone else taking delivery. Hopefully mine is a one off. Keen to hear other owners experience - rattles or rattle free?

Yep, I have a very annoying rattle started in the last week in the driver’s door, behind the door card. I don’t often have a passenger so no idea if there’s a rattle in the passenger side as well. The earliest my nearest dealership could get mine booked in is 22nd July for the rear window seal, roof rail track finishers to reseat/ replace after they curled up in the terribly terribly hot ‘“untropical” sunshine of Scotland a couple of weeks ago. The roof rails problem I suspect might be an ongoing problem due to crap design so I’m having the rails and crossbars fitted. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

I’ve now had more QC issues with this car than in any of the previous 12 new and 1X 2nd hand Land Rover products that I’ve purchased over the last 30 years - the 2nd hand one is my 1996 TDi300 90 that I expected to have rattles and bits fall off but even it seems to have better QC than the new one.
One area that the new one excels in though is fuel ecomony - I took it for its longest trip yet today - 92 miles on the A roads skirting the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National park. Went with the flow, Sunday drivers and tourists, stuck ruthlessly to the speed limits as that circuit is biker heaven on a sunny Sunday and the police are out in force with Speed cameras and unmarked motor cycles and patrol cars and averaged 39mpg on All Season tyres, although I did get stuck behind an artic and trailer for much of the A84 between Killin and Crianlarich, but it’s a beautiful road so just sat back and enjoyed the scenery with the pano roof open!

Sadly I have to report that it looks like the well known LR indie at Lix Toll has shut up shop, windows all boarded up and the petrol pumps are now the sort where you put your credit card into the pump. No used Defenders lined up outside , dead except for 4 recovery trucks parked on the forecourt Big Cry They looked after my 90 for many years until an LR specialist took over our village garage. Lix Toll was well known a few years ago for having some very special Carmichael modified vehicles on their forecourt - things like a bright yellow tracked Series, a Series specially designed with tractor wheels and a “Rail Rover” Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

Spiders, surely they have included those. How those little eight legged rascals have kept me company on long journeys Laughing

As to the original post take it back and get them to fix it. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

My 90 is a sanctuary for spiders, don’t know what attracts so many of them. on the D240? that works out to 7.3L/100km.

That is excellent consumption, LR claim 7.7L/100km. What was your average speed? --

I’ve always wondered at what stage in production they get fitted. I’ve never ticked the option box for them Laughing

My Velar has been my lemon, had a bad time with the D5 which is how I ended with the Velar. It’s been in the dealer more times than the previous 9 put together. I Should’ve stuck with my Freelander 2, best car LRs built and imo nothing has come close yet to beating it.

Mine is the D240
Trip average was 46mph but I drove on the speed limits as much as possible = there are long stretches at 50 to calm the bikers(with average speed cameras too) but elsewhere outside of villages it’s 60mph. Those figures are from the in car computer and I’ve learned over the years that JLR’s Trip computers are anywhere up to 10% optimistic, still even taking that into account for a little 2ltr TD hauling along a heavy brick, it’s still not bad. Struggled to get that in my 9 speed Evoque
One other thing with the new one - you want to pull out and overtake - no problem it has plenty of mid range ooomph, over took in places I wouldn’t even have considered in the TDi300 because there wasn’t a long enough run up! Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

^

still, pretty good for a new engine, and it should loosen up in a few thousand kms.

Considering LR claim 7.7L/100km, your Fuelly shows 8.8, so realistically it could go down to 8 after some time.

On the D240's 85L tank, that works out to a range of 1060km, which is great! --

At 60mph it’s also only turning around 1250rpm, is lovely and quiet with almost imperceptible gear changes unless you really kickdown hard, then the peace is shattered as it rockets up to 3500 as it drops several gears, but even at high rpm for a diesel the engine is very smooth, if very noisey! Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
