Watching this post closely. If you hadn't started this thread 90 Dreamer, I would have in the near future. I have the same issues as you where I don't need an out and out off road tyre, but don't want to see a road tyre on my rims.
Am I unique in saying that I haven't had any issues with the Continentals which LR fitted from new? I was going to reboot it with those (albeit they're not 265!!) |

Just to add this is a 90 HT and does a few miles towing and actually works fine on its original Goodyear Wranglers....

Have a look at Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S - I've just fitted a set of these today in 275/67/18 following research with the same sort of requirements. They seem to get good reviews around the web (admittedly mainly in the US, where presumably more of them have been sold).
I liked the fact that they've been designed as an all-season tyre, with sipes for winter driving and they are mountain snowflake rated. Also liked the look of them as a crossover between an AT and a more road-biased tyre. LINK 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green |

The above tyre is probably just the tyre you need, but... just looks too road biased for me.
I still really rate my BFG KO2's, some people slate them in the wet but that's not my experience at all. Performed great in all situations I've thrown at them. I also love my Toyo Open Country MT, a mud terrain tyres but performs really well on road and in wet and not noisy. 17inch rims are fairly unusual, so may be putting people off reading. Have you tried the search facility?
There is a good tyre size comparison website if you Google. I'd match the circumference to either the standard 235x85R16 up to 255x85R16. Maybe I wasn't clear it was more about trying to decide on a type of tyre..........size is easily sussed
Was trying to get some idea of peoples experience rather than making a potentially expensive mistake in buying a tyre that offers poor (or scary) wet performance, etc?? From talking to quite a few wheel people it seems 17" potentially offers a good compromise over ging to an 18" set-up...... New rims are here anyhows  Click image to enlarge |

Hi, this is my first time posting on this forum. To quickly introduce myself to everyone I before talk about tyres. I have a Santorini Black XS 90. It spends most of it's time on the road with the occasional gravel track. It's not used for green laning, mud plugging or pay and play days.

They were ok, but I wanted to upgrade with the idea of making the ride more stable and comfortable. I tried a set of BF Goodrich Ko2 265/75/16. I found sidewalls quite stiff as they are super strong for off road use. The road noise growl was noticeable. Like others have said on this forum they did not inspire confidence in the wet. They felt a little skittish. Having said all that I can't deny that they are a good tyre especially if you take your off-roading seriously. However they were not for me. Like you I was looking for something that was good in the wet, comfortable, had good traction in the snow as I spend a lot of time in the alps. But also retained off road capability. So after a bit more research I went for the Cooper Discoverer AT3 4s 265/75/16. I could not have been happier. The difference was night and day! I would definitely recommend them for what you are looking for. I recently drove down to the French Alps. They were quiet and comfortable. We drove through a thunder storm on the autoroute, there was not even a hint of aquaplaning. We also took it up some unmade tracks in the mountains and the Coopers performed faultlessly there too. I have not tried them in the snow yet so I can't comment there. I've also had several unsolicited comments about how chunky they look on the truck. So no worries about them looking like a road tyre. The other advantage of the Cooper Discoverer AT3 4s over the BF Goodrich KO2's is they are 5kg lighter per tyre! Which means there's a massive saving of 20kg of un-sprung weight and rotating mass. Which does good things, for the comfort, handling, braking and fuel consumption. I'm sure somebody more knowledgeable on this forum would be able to explain this. I hope the above helps! |
