Morning All,
I am looking for a post 2002 front axle casing please. Can be totally bare as I already have a complete axle here to swap over. Must be the later casing which takes the wider radius arms and the larger M16 Panhard Rod bolt rather than the old M14 ones. Does anyone have one spare please? Thanks Steve 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread |

Have you considered just using a 300tdi or early td5 axle and drilling the pan hard rod bracket out to take the 16mm bolt? They are cheap and readily available
That’s what I did when I rebuilt the axles, i did add a small brace to the pan hard rod bracket copying the 02 onwards axle |

Blackwolf, thanks for the heads-up. Hadn't thought that it could end up crossing into the defective end flange build period!
I currently have a pre-02 casing on it which i didnt realise until I came to fit it and found that the panhard bolt didnt fit! Ended up filing it out lying underneath to get the bolt in. Maybe i should just neaten it up and fit the brace as you have. Will have a look at some pictures and see what the difference is with the bracing as i cant picture it. The bracket is the other way around and there is an extra brace, but I would personally be comfortable drilling the hole out to 16mm as suggested above.

As above, I enlarged the 14mm hole to 16mm on my pre 2002 axle casing. I used a step drill bit for the outer hole and a blacksmith bit to enlarge the inner hole, using the outer as a 'guide'. I find twist drills have a habit of wandering when enlarging holes unless using a pillar drill.
I haven't added a brace yet but, as far as I can see it links the panhard bracket to axle casing as per the photo below? I note the post 2002 axles have holes drilled in the tops of the brackets too, anyone know why? 1985 127 V8 Build Thread Series 2 109" Series 1 80" |

Click image to enlarge The bracket on the later ones is flipped so I think the hole is there on both, the images off YRM show it anyway, and yes the bit you circled in red is the only extra bracing. I only added it to the passenger side where the panhard rod attaches and left the other end alone |

Great info cheers all.
I will keep my pre-02 casing and just tidy up the filed holes before i repaint. I might as well add some bracing at the same time. Cheers, Steve 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread |

Hmm, interesting.
Having just had a measure (in the dark!) of the 2 vehicles on my drive, the Puma seems to have the bracket 5 to 10mm further forward of the axle case. In which case the extra bracing will be to account for the load being applied at a different point. (Further away from the axle) I'll have another look, see what I can see in the daylight and measure bracket thicknesses too. Regarding the need for extra bracing on the earlier type axle. I think this is unnecessary. The same loads will be applied at exactly the same point, on the same bracket. The only difference being the joint is clamped with a M16 bolt, instead of the M14. Cost reduction would be the reason for changing to the larger, standard size M16 bolt. Regarding the small hole in the top of the bracket, it is only there as a tooling hole. It was used for location during the manufacturing process for the bracket. |

A practical reason for going to M16 would be greater clamping force as well since that's what holds the panhard rod in place.
I've had the bolt loosen slightly on the odd occasion after lots of off road work. Check it fairly regularly now. Ed 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |

Thanks for clarifying I presume the radius arm bracket has tooling holes for the same reason then?
I think I'll brace the brackets regardless, I noticed a tiny crack in the top of the radius arm bracket when mine was blasted. I've ground it out and, welded it back up full pen but, suspect it may have been caused by flexing of the panhard bracket due to the lack of a brace. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread Series 2 109" Series 1 80" |

I have a late front axle here, which is unused but was sat outside for a long time on a military chassis.
