As I continue on my path of becoming a car mechanic, the next thing after all the oils being changed and a brake fluid change is to change the coolant.
Can anyone tell me the best place to empty the coolant from, Haynes manual didnt make much sense to me Final question is it worth change the clutch fluid too ? Thanks in advance |

The manual suggests loosening a drain plug on the lower hose. I have been told that these plastic plugs perish, so it may be better to remove the lower radiator hose. This may require the removal of the inlet pipe between the intercooler (outlet side) and intake manifold to gain access, but perhaps not - see how you go.
It's a messy business, have a large basin ready as the coolant splashes onto your steering arms and rods and then all over the place. While the system Capacity is 13 litres, I doubt that you would be able to drain out more than about 7 litres. Similarly, that is probably all you will be able to put back in when you top it up. Do a bit of reading up to ensure you use acceptable coolant. LR specifies Ethylene Glycol based antifreeze with only organic acid technology corrosion inhibitors. You should also not mix antifreezes, a bit difficult when you are unable to drain the full 13 litre capacity. The ratio is 50% antifreeze and 50% water, but again, do your research. Some of these antifreeze products are sold as a 50/50 mix (Holts here in South Africa is an example that is already 50/50 out of the bottle). So take care to find out as much about the product as you can. You don't want to dilute something that is already diluted. Not as simple as it sounds unfortunately. |

Is there not another drain plug on the engine, behind the alternator, that requires removal of alternator to access. This will allow you to drain the full 13 litres.
I'd say only worth doing if you are going to do the lot, no point just replacing half surely? |

Agree completely, would have been nice to have a simple robust drain that could be opened without having to disturb anything else in order to get the entire 13 litres out.

If you had the time and patience, you could flush the system to get all 13L out. Have a look on YouTube for some good guides. Charlie

I just remove the radiator bottom hose and give it a flush. 1999 Defender TD5 110
