It was originally announced that the MOT extension would be in effect until 1st September but has been brought forward to 1st August. Defender 90XS SW

I took mine at its usual time. It saves a lot of hassle when the government stops the extension, garages might be swamped with people trying to get a MoT on their cars. Also, I wonder what would happen if you had a accident whilst you had a extension on your Mot, I bet the insurance companies would try every way possible to wriggle out of paying up. Just a thought.🤔

It will make no difference to the insurance - your insurance requires that you have a valid MOT certificate (unless MOT exempt) , which you do, and that your car is in a roadworthy. If your car is roadworthy you are ok, if you car is unroadworthy then it doesn't matter if you have a valid MOT certificate or not, you'll be uninsured.

So no difference. It is not as though your MOT has expired.

Ah, my mistake. I didn't spot that. Darren

It actually worked in my favour (which things don’t usually do) with having someone run into me just a few days before lockdown then the whole insurance process being slowed down due to no one being at work, my mot was due on April 17th and with the headlight panel being wonky it wouldn’t have passed. So instead of having to sorn it I’ve been able to wait for everything getting organised and it’s having its mot in a couple of weeks Mr. Green Ray

My MOT was due on April 26th. Booked it in the week the garage opened for 27th May. All done and as with mk1collector, it worked well for me as it gets my MOT and service a bit further away from my other vehicle to help with cash-flow Laughing

I felt the same way as williamthedog, I didn't want to leave it as I could see the garages getting swamped, especially if anything suddenly changed.

Off topic a little, did the Northern Ireland MOT problem get sorted? They were having issues with their lifts in the MOT centres, if I recall. I never heard any more, so assume it all got fixed, unless Covid put pay to it?

Personally I didn't take "advantage" of the extension, my local MOT stations (I use different stations for different vehicles) were still open so I just booked my vehicles in as normal and took them in as & when required. I am classed as an essential worker (but working from home) however this never even came up as they just took the bookings without any questions (this was at end of April for June bookings). ONE LIFE, GET IT!

In response to Rashers query about Northern Ireland, MOT stations are due to resume testing from 20th July but only for a few specific categories, namely, taxis and buses due a first test, vehicles not registered in NI but due a test and any vehicle whose test has been expired for over 12 months. All other vehicle testing remains suspended. Not all test centres will re-open as some are been used for testing related to Covid-19. Defender 90XS SW

I think the logic at the time was that we may go full blown lockdown and hence many peeps including MOT guys would be unable to work and this would keep things 'legal'.....

Thanks Discomog Thumbs Up

I don't suppose Covid has helped the authorities get the NI MOT Test Stations up and running.
