No smoking as well I take it?
Do you mean a beer or a barrel? Keep it to only a few drinks a week. Everyday sustained exercise which sounds like you are nearly there with. At least an hour/7km a day. What are you doing in gym weights? Cardio? Keep your Weight at normal levels Reduce your stress levels I hit needing medication at around 40. Just started taking it. Then at 44 started increasing my exercise and eating well with lower drinking. Now doing endurance walk events feeling much better. Halved medication and looking like I will come off it completely. 1995 Defender 110 CSW 1971 SIIA Lightweight |

Nope, no fags either. Probably drink 15 bottles of beer over fri, sat, sun.
Strength 3 days a week, cardio 1 day. Walking all other days and an active job. I break a sweat daily! Work can be stressful, I meditate daily which helps. |

I think there maybe genetic factors beyond your control. My Dad, who is considerably older admittedly, has a super healthy lifestyle and just has never been able to get his blood pressure down since his 50s. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Mine is always high-ish (it averaged out at 139/84 over a week early in the year).
I had had a health check at my GP's surgery and they said they'd like to check it. I already have my own Omron BP monitor. When I went back, expecting to be in trouble, the lady said that was fine and they only get excited if it's a lot higher and you have other health concerns. A cynic could be excused for thinking the firms making drugs to lower blood pressure appear to have decided on the accepted 'high' figures as they are a nice little earner for them. As long as you keep an eye on it and lead a generally healthy lifestyle, it's almost certainly nothing to worry about. It's people with an unhealthy lifestyle and high figures that are at risk. If you're still bothered, search for 'York Cardiology' on YouTube. He'll calm you down. But I am only a plumber of course. |

Just to add, the chap from York Cardiology says as you get older, your blood vessels go from being elastic like a balloon to more like a hot water bottle.
You can't get the elasticity back once it's gone. I can get my BP down to 122/70 with relaxation and deep breathing, but it will go right up to 170/95 if I think about something that annoys me, such as the BBC! That's the hot water bottle, as I'm old (and grumpy). |

When I turned 50 mine started to creep up to the giddy heights of 165/110. After wearing a monitor for 24hrs the Dr put me on ramipril, an Ace inhibitor, and now I'm back down to 120's / 80's. Bizarrely I have the resting heart rate (pulse) of about 48 to 50 which puts me in the athlete bracket. This is definitely hereditary.!! So my top tip is to check your B.P, there are no symptoms.

My GP told me I have high blood pressure, was actually picked up in my works annual medical. Went to hospital for lots of tests and checks which didn't really pinpoint anything out of the ordinary and more likely hereditary. I was put on a low dose of Ramipril then saw a different DR on a check up who took me off the pills and told me to stop drinking tea and coffee due to the caffeine. I drink mainly decaf now and BP seems to be within acceptable parameters for my age, 41

^ those are low - I would be delighted with 140/80 - mine was at 177/111 - now on high doses of rampiril and 3 other drugs to get it under control - ish

Mine is consistently 140/85,pulse 48. Has been since highlighted on medical in 2003. They did a load of tests and said must be the way you are. 8i run an hour a day, cycle weekends and some lunches and swim 30mins a day. Don't drink or smoke and have worn out joints. Something will get us all in the end. Cheers

Co1, tricky one, diet sounds good, perhaps focus more on cardio than strength training.

About four years ago I took myself off to the doctors as I was getting puffy legs and was feeling a little under the weather. When the doc took my blood pressure she went quiet and told me to just sit quietly as she tried again, the third time she went for it the thing was reading 220/154. As I'm a sole carer for my son I was told to go straight home via the pharmacy and take it easy with the pills she'd ordered.
Nowadays it hovers around the 160/85 and all is well. I do feel the cold a lot more nowadays and also suffer with the extreme heat, but I've allways steered clear of the heat anyway. |
