protests
having just read a few more news articles I'm not sure which side of the fence to sit.

without these protests I'm not sure if we'll see an increase or decline in the drugs industry and rambo style knife sales.

oh it a complicated world we live.

if the above makes no sense then don't worry. None of it makes any sense to me either.

I just hope they don't take it too far. that statue in bristol thrown in the river cos he was pro slaves. weren't those pyramids made by slaves - should we flatten them too? like I say - it's all a bit too complicated. time for a cup of tea. Thumbs Up

ps. I think we should keep the pyramids but I can't be bothered to start a protest.

There seems to be a lot of pressure or temptation for everybody to have really strong opinions on everything these days, whether it be BLM, Brexit, Covid, Trump or whatever. I've come to realisation that actually, if I don't know much about something and especially if it is completely outside my experience, it's fine to say I don't have a view one way or another. I'm sure over time, as I read more stuff I'll be able to form a view, but that's where I am at the minute.

Having said all that the statue situation is interesting. I've heard it compared to the Pyramids, stuff the Romans built etc. But that is maybe not the right comparison in my view. Isn't there a difference between a monument specifically to glorify someone who's wealth may have been built on unsavoury practises and serves no other real purpose, as opposed to the products of a large civilisation that served a wider purpose? But then I guess you could still question statues of individuals. I'm not sure, but there must be a line somewhere. I don't think any rational individual would think leaving a statue to Hitler up would be acceptable for example. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Things are verging on the absurd at the moment, and predominantly fuelled by the media. I actually think they are to blame for the majority of what is happening at the moment. Don’t get me started on social media!!

These are certainly very strange times we live in. I honestly thought we had left the issues of racial discrimination in the past where they deserve to be (along with all other forms), but perhaps I’m just ignorant or sheltered. The whole concept is absurd, using skin colour to decide on what a person is like is no more logical than using the colour of their socks.

I agree on the colour issue too - it's the culture that needs sorting out.

I have some fairly lame views and feel that hanging and firing squad should be practiced more frequently and those pushing drugs, using rambo knives and grooming young girls should all join the above queue regardless of colour.

the thing that gets me however is this profiling business. people seem to think it's discriminatory however if your looking for a repeat offender rapist you're not likely to looking for a lady in her 90's.

the comment above about a line needing to be drawn I completely agree with only I suspect the line might be a bit wiggly.

and reference the Hilter statue I just hope they don't pull all the WWII films Crying or Very sad

Throwing a statue in the dock doesn't mean that slavery didn't happen. The value of the statue is that it reminds us of the fact that terrible things have and continue to be done, and that we should always be objective. You can't undo history.

Bristol, Liverpool, and probably many other places wouldn't exist if it wasn't for slavery, should Bristol be razed to the ground (actually best not answer this)?

I'd rather that these protesters work to stop the slavery that is still happening in this country today, with gang-masters etc., than worry about how their feeling are being upset by unchangeable history.

Bang on the money blackwolf. Zero can be done about the past, the focus should be on the present and future.

My own thoughts are similar to Blackwolfs and I think the 'best' thing is more education about the things that have occurred regardless of how dark they may be - that way we hopefully learn from our forebearers and don't repeat their undoubted mistakes

I also think we should stop judging 2-300+ year old values as if it was happening today - things have changed and moved on so whilst we should acknowledge it I don't feel the need to remove it??
Lastly I would suggest that most people 200yrs ago were mistreated and abused by wealthy land / mine / mill owners who simply saw them as a "cash cow" with probably the only difference they had not been transported thousands of miles from home

In day to day life my general rule is that anyone I meet gets a decent chance, if they treat me like a prick or think they can take the pi&& then they don't get another.........I don't care which Martian empire you came from or what part of society, move along.....

Absolutely spot on! The same as the creation of these events and the backlash the guy died which was totally wrong regardless of colour or creed and despite local police practice or procedures! The officer has been arrested/ charged and rightly so as I hope any officials would have been under the circumstances.

What is wrong is the following riots and vandalism that has been following as a means of protest and using the tragic death as a reason.

People are becoming more and more angry and now using brexit, lockdown, coronavirus, Tesco running out of bread to create a riot.

We were clapping like seals a few weeks ago for the NHS and key workers, yesterday I saw a guy in a newish Mercedes C63 AMG brake checking a Moran logistics artic (all supermarkets dairy supply) for daring to hold him up at the goods vehicle speed limit.

We’re heading for civil war in this country! It’s been on the boil for a while and the upcoming recession will probably be the last straw. Formerly mao99999
