If you can see the shaft turning in the drive member then you'll need to replace the member and probably the shaft.

Pop the rubber caps off.
Youll see then. If not its a shaft/CV (Usually makes a crunching noise) or diff also crunchy Instagram @defender_ventures Empire Tuning - Agent |

If the front drive has failed it will probably be the cheese front diff. Done a few of them over the years. But it’s no biggy, it’s a great opportunity to bond with your truck.

If the splines on the drive member are gone, I am afraid that the splines on the shaft are not that good either. Roel

Had a wee look and the splines on the drive member are just about non existent. I had a spare one from when I changed to 1 piece rear shafts so cleaned it up and popped it on. The shaft isn’t overly jaggy looking, it’s going now but definitely on my ‘to do sooner rather than later’ list. At least it keeps me mobile just now. Cheers for all the input

Change both CV's and drive hubs.... you'll be amazed how much less clunky the transmission will become

This sounds expensive. Any idea what kind of money is in that, although it certainly sounds like a good idea? |

At that price it’s got to be done then. Are there any that should be avoided, I’m thinking blue box here, as it’s obviously going to involve a bit of work to get it all done. It’s not something I’d be wanting to re-visit in another couple of years at least. I’d be puting it into my local garage for the work but I always supply the parts so there is hopefully no messing around waiting on bits.

As suggested above,
I changed the rear drive shafts and all four drive members on my 90 TD5 and what a difference, so much nicer to drive with most of the slack removed from the transmission. On yours, if one of the drive members has completely worn out then l bet the other three are past their best as well. Don’t forget to fit the paper gaskets when you do the drive members! |

If you don't have ABS try to get the none ABS version as the are stronger. I went for Ascroft they are a bit more expensive but till now the last.
I broke a few standard ones. Roel 1984 90 2.5 na Diesel - RR V8 (1994-2001) 1997 Camel Trophy Discovery 300TDI (2001-2009) 2005 G4 Discovery III 4.4 V8 (2008-2018) It's gone but it still hurts. 2003 90 Td5 (2009-now) |

Having a look at CV kits, it is mostly Britpart that is popping up. Would these be ok or are there better versions available? Yes Ashcroft would be the dream but as Roel has pointed out they are big £££! Can anyone point me in the direction of a decent kit and maybe even a supplier of such?
