Anything is possible - with a huge amount of specialist machining and cost & it would be a retrograde step.

What is the reason you want an R380 on a 2.2?
Is it for different gear ratios? 1st is a bit low on the MT82, agree. And I find the 2nd is a bit too high to take off from standstill without slipping the clutch too much. For my use, 6th is also a bit too high, so that practically only gives me 4 gears to use. Torque rating, on paper: R380 - 380Nm MT82 - 500Nm 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Anything is possible, though I think that even the 2.2 TDCi has too much torque for the R380 (the 2.4 more so), but it begs the question why would you want to?
The R380 is not a good gearbox, the MT82 (at least in Defender form) is probably better, as well as stronger. |

I actually think the R380 is a very good box. A lot of TD5s with remaps and have not seen many breaking R380s. The diffs will break much before the boxes do. Family member has stage2 remap on a TD5 and I feel it has much more torque than my 2.2. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

The reason for the question is that I’m still at odds as what engine to put in my old 90, and having a 110 Puma as well, my mate suggested putting a 2.2 Duratorq engine in and I wondered if it was compatible with any ogearbox 110 XS CSW 2009

Slightly off topic, sorry OP.
I have a 2.4 Puma and a 5.0 GT mustang. Both have the MT82 6 speed. The LR is renowned to be a great gearbox, the Mustang is renowned for having an awful gearbox.. (in fact Ford US has a law suit against it for selling not fit for purpose goods). Why is this? Is the LR box a "real" Getrag? I know the GT gearbox is Chinese. again sorry for going off topic a little, but I think its a great question. I read somewhere that the Defender box is built in Germany, while the Mustang’s is built in China. Although they should be built to the same quality spec, I would not exclude that different assembly plants source their components from different suppliers.
How about the Transit boxes? What is their reputation? 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |
