Puzzled by Electric window problem
Both my electric windows are not working, so I have tried to identify the issue by elimination.
Fuses, both 20amp and 5 amp good
Switches, swopped with another vehicles working switches
Relay swopped but no difference.
Wires in door convoluted rubber grommet. Both sides good
Now the puzzle...…..

On both sides, with the ignition on but both switches in neutral (off) position.
I am reading 12v on both the blue and red wires in the bulk head connectors. this is independently against chassis earth -ve.
I am beat.
Can anyone offer any advice please.

Also, wanted to check, before I tried but can I put 12v positive to the red or blue wire on the motor to check if the motors work, without doing any harm.

Thanks

Oh better mention its a 2.4 tdci

You need check pos and neg on red and blue wires and no to neg ground as switch changes the polarity to make the motor rotate clock wise and counter clock

Thank you, but I have starred at this until my eyes popped out my head on springs. I think I need an interpreter. The manual says that the windows work on a "switched earth", but the red or blue surely carry voltage when the switch is activated.

You reckon the wires in the rubber Gromit are fine?

So you've definitely multi metered to check you are getting +12 on both contacts at the multipin that actually connects to the motor?

I only say that as diagnosing a similar issue on my elec windows revealed lots of brittle and intermittent original wiring in those rubber sheaths.

I believe the way it works is that both motor lines run at +12 so the motor is floating and inactive and then when you choose a direction one of those 12v lines has its 12v lifted so becomes an earth... so the motor spins one way or t'other depending on which 12v is lifted.
Basically like how your alt check light goes to a terminal that is +14 when the alt is running. So earths and gives dash illumination when not running and then when the alt is spinning floats that lamp up to have no earth, so goes out...

Thank you benniferj. that makes sense why I have the voltage on both wires, if when you activate the switch the other wire completes the earth circuit.
I will do some more investigation with the multimeter.

Ok, so Drivers side is now fixed and working. The motor was full of water. I cleaned it out and re-greased and is now working like new. I have not looked further at the Passenger side yet, other than check power to the connector. It's the wifes Defender and after being told that both windows had stopped working I had presumed it was something electrical that applied to both. I think the truth is the passenger side packed up a while ago and it was only when the drivers side packed up I was informed that they had both stopped. While I had the door stripped today I replaced the red and blue wires with some more flexible wire as I noticed the insulation had started to crack on closer inspection.

Thank you for all your help -much appreciated.

We will see what tomorrows inspection of the other door brings. Smile
