Use my 110 for towing a twin axle ifor around the 3t mark quite regularly. It's stock at the moment.
It does it. It's not quick, and some steep hilly bits of motorway bring you down to 50ish in short order!! Also tow with a LWB Peugeot Boxer, and I wouldn't say the landy is in any way harder work! |

Similar experiences to the above with my 110 on stock tune, It's no ball of fire but does ok, I'd enjoy a bit more grunt for sure. 2003 Defender 110 TD5 SW

Great to hear! Sound like the remap wouldn't go amiss..
It'll be pulling a track car on a twin axle (or possibly tri) trailer for a short period, then moved to a larger enclosed transporter with wheel carriers / various gubbins which no doubt hurt the weight.. |

I used to regularly tow a tray back 90 around the country,
My 90 runs D2 gearing, I had a hairy remap done and big intercooler Although I don’t rush around when towing it would sit at 60 in 5th gear fine unless it was a long big hill, then dropped down to 4th So to summarize, I don’t think a remap is nessacary but makes ltowing life a bit more relaxed Hope that helps |

For towing the weight is not that important, air resistance much more.
A 90 td5 is a good towing vehicle even in standard form. A tune helps a little I sometimes tow with my 90. Click image to enlarge However a Disco 3 with 4.4 ltr V8 tows a lot better. More stable and more power. Click image to enlarge But at a cost. I ran a standard tune base spec Hardtop 1999 td5 for two years. Used it for various trailers. Looked oddest with the Bateson tri axle 18 foot tilt bed trailer.
It was most enjoyable with this huge trailer and did not struggle with it if you were sensible loading it. Did a whole day on a Sunday to Stoke collected a kit car and loads of parts, bits and clutter for a friend of a friend. Did this just fine, no trouble and not really wanting for more power. Less noise would have helped, but survived fine. Normal tune would be just fine initially, then see what suits you? |

Thanks all and some great pictures!
Yes think it all sounds pretty good to me. I was eventually planning a tune on it, but seems it wouldn't be a miss to bring that forward. After all.... doesn't appear that I'll be out on a track anytime soon.. |

I use mine to pull a horse box and also 8x5 twin axle ifor. Last time was this Thursday when i had a small digger on the back of the ifor.
TBH it is totally standard defender 90 and meets my expectations well. I am against trying to over enhance an engine as my personal preference is for longevity of the engine which is more likely in standard form...and it pulls the trailer well. |

I once towed a Discovery 300 TDI on my 16’ Ifor with the TD5 90 in standard tune which was okay considering the weight but felt sluggish compared to the Pumas but slightly better than the 300 TDIs.
I can remember talking to a North Yorkshire farmer about his then new 1999 T reg TD5 90 with a Ifor cattle trailer in Gisburn mart, He was moaning about how it couldn’t “pull the skin off a rice pudding” etc and no where near as good as a TDI. All I can put it down to is the early accelerator pedals as mine pull definitely better than the TDIs but requires a different driving style. I can remember when I was 11 or 12 my dad and I went to collect a rotten old Austin Gypsy with a tilting bed trailer and his old 2.25 diesel series 3 LWB safari we went up a hill on the way home in low 2nd pouring smoke at walking pace and my dad (an old school heavy haulage driver) saying it’s okay we’ll make it there’s still another gear left the irony now with a remapped Puma I can easily change up into normal 3rd on the same climb with the Ifor and a tractor on the back. I would say the TD5 definitely needs some more revs to get going than a 300tdi, which seem much happier chugging about just above idle!

Yes got to keep revs up on the Td5 but that’s not a bad thing with a straight zero silencer Griffin exhaust

I think the same the td5 is lacking some power below 1800 rpm above that it's better then the 300 tdi. My first 90 an 2.5 na diesel that was different. with a strong head wind, I had problems with the 4x4 club trailer. And The Netherlands is more or less flat. Just get a mild remap, someone like Dynachip will do that and it just makes the Land Rover so much better with no downsides.
Mine’s got about 25bhp over standard, plus more torque. On hills you can stay in 5th gear at 65mph where before l was flat out in 4th at about 55mph |

actually one of the TD5 pickups I had a little while back had a remap on it, although previous owner was unaware who did it but that drove very well all over.
