Dont do this when someone installed a non original oilfilter
Just a word of advice.. ...I changed Oil the other day on my newly acquired defender. Previous owner had installed a Bosch oilfilter which was near impossible to turn . I Got the the magnificent idea of using one meter 1/2 water pipe just gently tapping on the left side of the filter - worked perfect it went loose right away. I mounted original filter Oil etc and went for a spin. Afterwards I noticed a loft of oil under the filter Down the exhaust etc...but the filter was dry..I just thought it was from changing the filter ... but no ...the spillage continued...After investigation I found a leak from a hairline crack on the filter housing... SO Do not try to tap the filter off!!!! And I will forener use original filter and filterwrench...It baffles me that the housing is so delicate....I tapped semi hard on the filter only in order to make it turn....but that must have been to much.

Personally I think it is not because the not original filter. I think the filter was fitted to tight. I used quality but not genuine filters but always use a filterwrench.
I just use my hand in an awkward position to tighten it.Roel
