Driveshaft u-joint strength
Today I droped the rear driveshaft of my MY2011 110 in order to change a worn u-joint. I was surprised how small it actually is - 27mm cap/ 75mm width. After all the truck is supposed to carry 1t load. Do I have to be concerned about its strength? I do carry spares though. Defender 110 SW MY2011 2.4tdci decat, no EGR

Yes, one reason I upgraded to Gwyn Lewis HD shafts, much bigger and more robust ujs. Plus dc joint on front shaft.

Literally millions of Land Rovers have done literally hundreds of millions of miles all around the world carrying and towing heavy loads and the UJs hold up. They do fail of course, but that is in the vast majority of cases due to lack of lubrication and to suggest that they are not strong enough for the work the vehicle is designed for would be wrong.

The main issue with them is that the very nature of the design means that it’s difficult to get grease to all the bearing journals which means that eventually one dries out and fails. But with regular greasing as per the manual they’ll do many tens of thousands of miles.

I bought mine used in 2015 and since then I drove 80k km. This was the first u-joint i had to replace. Actually not bad for such a small u-joint.
I also realized the driveshaft has no grease plug, so sooner or later I will have to replace it anyway. This will be the right time to upgrade to bigger u-joint as well. Defender 110 SW MY2011 2.4tdci decat, no EGR
