Is there such a thing as a 6 speed gear box (Conversion?) for a TD5 90 2001? I thought I saw a mention here a while ago but cant find it now! Mike

So the overall effect from that or a higher ratio transfer box is similar? Mike

I believe Winchester Gears are working on a 'bolt in' solution to run the 6 speed out of a TDCi in a TD5.
They are also working on a number of upgrades to improve the strength/longevity of the box too. Chris |

The 6 speed top gear is hardly any different from the 5 speed. The Pumas run a 1.2 transfer box not a 1.4, that’s why the are more relaxed at speed.
The 6 speed first gear is lower to compensate for this when setting off with a heavy load. |

I always come around to wondering whether to change Transfer Box to a 1.2 but always leave it at 1.4 to keep a nice grunty 1st.
I think the best but expensive option is an Ashcroft high 5th gearbox mod, but of course you've got the work of getting the gearbox out to do that. Either that or an overdrive would be handy. Im just not convinced a 1.2 on something that tows sometimes is a good plan. Insta: @thebenjordan4x4 |

Always think about doing this to my td5 but end up drawing the conclusion that it's not worth it for my uses...

Quickest and cheapest way for more top end is a Disco transfer box, just limits the low down and towing performance.

Night and day difference
I swapped from a r380 and a 1.2 tc to a mt82 with a 1.1 tc and its so much better. Traffic is a breeze and there is always a gear for any situation. The power from the td5 lets it just keep goin. This is the gearbox that should have cone with. Can't leave well enough alone |

^^ Interesting, do you have any details of the conversion you can share?
I have to say that I much prefer the MT82 in my Puma to the R380 in my Disco2, I really don't rate the R380 highly at all, horrible baulky thing that it is. |
