well, if peace of mind is the objective, when I was into the timing chest, as well as the tensioner and the belt, I think I'd look at the camshaft and crankshaft seals. Draining the oil beforehand wouldn't be such a big deal/expense.
You might find removing the camshaft and crank pulleys is extra work, but if they are removed, seals replaced, and then pulleys back on, you shouldn't need to go back in there for a long time. I'd say that mileaGe-wise 20k since the last change isn't a big deal, but after 7 years I can see where you're coming from. Is the OEM kit recommended or is it not really needed. Paddock do three kits,
Timing belt kit STC4096L or STC4096LDR – Includes seals? or STC4096LG – OEM – Is this better?? I presume I will have to order the seals separate if getting the OEM kit. Also, Water pump, PEB500090G – OEM – Twice the price of Britpart (is it worth getting the bolt set to go with it?) P Gasket metal – PET100790G – Metal P gasket but Britpart – is this the one to go for? And one more thing, I want to change the Serpentine Belt as the one that's on is showing signs of age. Is there only one type on the 300tdi, or if there are more how can I tell which I have? The belt that is on does not seem to have any marks or numbers on it. Sorry for all the questions but I want to get the items on order due to the virus shutting so many things down! Thank you for your help. Mick |

Always opt for the most expensive part that you can afford.
Not that it will automatically be better quality but it will definitely cut out the majority of crap available. Avoid Britpart if possible, although their non mechanical parts are more reliable than their mechanical parts. Their are two different lengths of belts. I can't remember the numbers but it is all about the alternator pulley size. |

20k miles is not very much. When I replaced mine it had 90k and 13 years on it, still looked like new, but had probably stretched a tad. 'Volvo XC 70, taking the rough with the smooth’

Hi, there are two different length serpentine belt on the 300, if you check the alternator pulley sizes , if you have the large pulley you need the long belt, if that’s makes sense

The early type 300s have a bigger alternator pulley (61mm dia from memory) while the later ones (from about 1996 on) have a smaller pulley (again from memory, but I think 49mm) and a slightly shorter serp belt. ---

Many thanks folks. Managed to measure the pulley and it is the smaller diameter one. I just need to get my list of items to order (for a full service) and get the stuff ordered.
I noticed a thread where someone had used a garden sprayer for loading diff oil etc. They just took the nozzle off, pressurised it and let it do its stuff. I thought that was a good idea so that will be on the next shopping list! Typically I have got the vehicle, its nice weather and I have work for the first time in ages!!! M |

I thought the OP mentioned 'timing belt', this is obviously not the serpentine belt. Clarification needed. You cannot actually see the timing belt. unless...... 'Volvo XC 70, taking the rough with the smooth’

The thread drifted Stumpy. When I was looking to order the timing belt I noticed there were 2 different ones for the 300tdi and asked what the difference was so I didn't get the wrong one!
