clean galvanized chassis for painting
Hi,
I have a galv. chassis from Marsland that has been used for about 5 years. It is rather dirty and I tried to clean it with zink cleaner and abrasive bonded fabric. Of course the zink should stay.

Any suggestions how to clean it properly without damaging the zink too much?
I wanted to avoid blasting it to avoid the mess, and dry ice blasting is kinda expensive over here.

As your chassis is 5 years old it has aged and the galv surface has become "weathered", so do your best to remove as much of the grime with soapy water then when it is dry use a mordant solution to prep for paint.

This is the stuff I use on galv before paint and it works very well. https://www.frost.co.uk/granville-galvanis...XUEALw_wcB

The top coat I used on the second row crossmember was Raptor 1k undercoat rattler can. Super covering and it will be lanoguarded once fitted.

Thx alot geobloke,
I planed on a 2k primer (RADEX EP Epoxy Primer) followed by PU 330-20 2K-PU, I guess that won't be an issue

No issue with the 2k. I would plan to spray some chassis wax inside as well as an extra precaution, even zinc wears off eventually.

My original chassis has lasted 20 odd years and has only rusted through along the internal welds of all places and you cannot do a thing about that, but Big Cry

I see you’re in Ireland too, I’d recommend this stuff it’s not cheap, but then there’s no primer, etch or t-wash etc to buy and it’s one coat https://sperringalvanisers.com/galvacoat-galvanized-paint/

You won’t need the mordant on old galvanized steel. For cleaning, after a wash, use a good degreaser/panel wipe that will leave no residue.

If you want to be sure your primer will adhere to galv well, you can use an etch primer first. If you have experience of it and know that it will cope with off road abuse, then your epoxy primer straight onto to galv is ok.

Hi guys,
thx all for the feedback.
I have spoken with 3 local paint shops,
they all recommended 2k primer and then raptor like paint for the chassis.
they recommended not to use etch primer as it is 1k and counterproductive.

Since the chassis is really dirty, They recommended to use a zink cleaner although there is already natural oxidation.

I guess I need a good clean with something that removes all the oily/greasy bits first.

Raptor paint chips easily so I'd be cautious using it on a chassis. I use POR15 on chassis.

It is actually not raptor, it is a 2k paint with a structure like raptor specially made for chassis and protection against stones etc..

Interesting, can ask a question about that? I have a new galvanised bumper AND a bunch of these small pots of POR15 black paint. I love that paint, but I have been hesitant to use it on my new bumper straight as I am concerned it might flake off over time. I also don't have access to this mysterious T-wash Mordant Solution, which is a bit of a British thing, certainly not off the shelf in Mainland Europe.

Your experience with POR15 on galvanised steel without a primer is good? No signs of cracking and peeling? POR15 is pretty strong.

Salutation de Kehl TexasRover,

If you have a new galv piece, you need to accelerate oxydation before painting it.
I was recomended https://www.lackstore.de/Mipa-Zinkreiniger-10-Liter
to do so.

There is also Rustins galvanised metal primer via amazon.fr that would do the job.
