Help - Rear cross member bolts
So removed the NAS step some time ago to referb it and with all this time on my hands thought I would freshen the rear cross member (seems a popular job at the moment)

I was going to remove these 4 bolts to clean up and paint the cross member but had second thoughts.

What role do they play in a 110 CSW 7 seater?

Is there a load spreader that will fall out if I remove both from a side at the same time or is there no harm in taking them all out at the same time?

Thanks in advance.

Are they not something to do with the rear seat belts!

Look up underneath the wheel arches and you'll see two substantial brackets from the back face of the crossmember up to the underside of the tub which, as Co1 says, are part of the seat belt supports.

You can probably take them out without issue* as the bracket is also fixed at the top but don't forget to put them back in again.

*That doesn't mean that they may not be difficult to remove! Darren

Thanks for that, thought they were to do with the rear seat belts, may just loosen them off so I get behind them.

Related, am going to replace the 10 above those, the body to rear crossmember bolts. I see the new ones come with a nunc lock type of nut. Do the originals as I imagine it must be quite difficult to get purchase on the nut to remove? Any tips?

The ten body to crossmember bolts thread into captive nuts so you won't need to get behind them. Darren

It's different on older models - pre-TD5, from memory. Darren

This is on a 2007 Tdci

I see there are variations in the stainless versions, button head like these which is the profile already fitted:

or more barreled like these:

Also all seem to be A2 steel, presume this is sufficiant?

Any thoughts on my nuts... Which bolts to go for?,

Is it just a personal preference?

Yes, A2 is fine for this application. The choice of head is personal choice, as much as anything. I probably wouldn't use standard hex head bolts as it's more likely to damage the paint with a socket.

Don't forget to isolate the stainless bolt from the body. Nylon washers are useful for this but also a dab of something like Duralac or Weicon anti-seize paste on the threads is a good idea. Darren
