I didn't realise Warn did a 10,000lb version.
![]() Click image to enlarge "The Warn M8274 is a legendary piece of machinery. First introduced in 1974, it found itself bolted to the nose of forest service vehicles, logging trucks, utility company work horses, and hard-core off-road rigs in short order. Then it set about earning a reputation as an infallible tool. Collectors regularly scour junk yards looking for old Warns to bolt to their modern vehicles. And why not? With its beefy electric motor, 8,000-pound capacity, and ability to spool 150 feet of line, the M8274 can keep pace with any modern winch. Which is why I was happy to see a modern version hanging out on the Warn site. I was poking around over there wasting time doing research when I found something truly spectacular. Warn regularly dusts off its war horse for special occasions, and the M8274-70 is the newest iteration. Launched in 2018 to celebrate the company’s 70th anniversary, the updated version boasts a 10,000-pound capacity thanks to a 6-horsepower electric motor, and ditches the heavy steel cable of older versions for 3/8 synthetic rope and an aluminum fairlead to match. Other upgrades include IP68 waterproof contactors in place of the old unit’s solenoids. That should mean even more longevity for a machine already known for outliving the vehicles that wear it. Warn also claims the 70th anniversary model is 50 percent faster than before. So, yeah. Add that to the wish list. Warn only built 999 of these things, and while it came out last year, there are still a few sitting on shelves around the country for much less than the eye-watering MSRP of $3,199. ![]() Warn M8274-50 This isn't the first time Warn has turned to the M8274 to mark an anniversary. Twenty years ago, the M8274-50 (above) commemorated the company's 50th birthday, and while it has a lower 8,000 pound capacity and a traditional steel line, it's just as good-looking. Does your race hauler need a limited-edition winch? Probably not. But it doesn’t not need one, either. If you're looking for a little retail therapy during the current crisis, there are worse ways to spend your pennies." https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/c...o-awesome/ |

Just reading that there was also an M8274-60:
"The limited-edition M8274-60 will have all of these renowned features plus some unique upgrades including: 150’ of lightweight synthetic rope with a versatile 360-degree swiveling hook; a polished-aluminum hawse fairlead; a sealed contactor for outstanding reliability; a revised metal clutch lever; and a powerful new 6.0 hp. motor with cooling fins. The winch will wear a black powder-coated finish and have commemorative WARN 60th Anniversary badges. Only 250 units will be produced, each one individually numbered. WARN will be placing one of these winches up for bids at the SEMA Silent Auction at the 2008 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Auction donations will benefit the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund." https://www.rockcrawler.com/features/newss...n_8274.asp |

I stripped ours and had it re-powdercoated in the same style as the 50th anniversary ones.
Trouble is, the replacement stickers are like hens teeth, and new solenoid pack covers (even if using an albright solenoid i was trying to keep it looking original) are an absolute fortune to buy. ![]() Click image to enlarge This was the image I was trying to copy. ![]() |

When I rebuilt a couple of 8274's years back (in the 90's, maybe early 2000's), I emailed Warn and they sent an envelope over from the US of A with a bunch of stickers in FoC for me.

For that money I'd be fitting a Red Hornet 2 or Gigglepin GP100
Far improved designs based on the same concept and land cheaper than the Warn 70. In the case of the Gigglepin it is a much neater 8274-a-like with all the upgrades you'd want to do to an 8274 built in. Insta: @thebenjordan4x4 |

With that said, I literally just rebuilt my Warn 8274 today, but it does have a Red Ox motor and some Gigglepin upgrades such as the top housing bearing fix (that replaces the original awful design) Insta: @thebenjordan4x4

Of my 8274 / Red... Yep.
![]() Click image to enlarge It's a great combo. I'm impressed with the Red motor. It was going to be either that or a Bow2+ so I went for what I guess is kind of the underdog in the UK at the moment. I'm running the winches off of 2 dedicated Northstar AGM batteries at 24v but with a 12v solenoid pack to switch the current. Fairly standard winch but with the Gigglepin freespool and upper bearing upgrade, and have just refreshed all the seals, bearings and brake overhaul. It's a shame I didn't have some nice dark grey paint in to repaint the top housing but still as you can see from the vehicle, it's a fairly rough plaything anyway! Yesterday morning it looked more like this: ![]() Click image to enlarge Insta: @thebenjordan4x4 |

And now the 70th anniversary edition becomes the new standard model.
![]() Click image to enlarge "The “new” 8274 now boasts a 10,000-pound capacity thanks to a six-horsepower motor (although they have retained the 8 in the model designation, which referred to the original’s capacity). It can also be had from the factory with synthetic line. Importantly, the original solenoid-based switching mechanism for the motor has been replaced with a waterproof, solid-state Albright contactor. The solenoids, while durable, were not waterproof, and could on extremely rare occasions freeze in the closed position, which meant the winch would keep pulling even if the operator let go of the remote button. So, why did I state “through 2019” rather than 2020, and why did I put “new” in quotes? Because we have already seen this winch. It was introduced last year as the 70th Anniversary model (see here), with the same 10,000-pound capacity, Albright contactor, and synthetic line. What Warn has (apparently) done is to simply make the anniversary model the new standard 8274. Even the list price, an eye-watering $3,199, is the same. Notwithstanding that tiny bit of marketing legerdemain, the new Warn 8274 looks set to enjoy another several decades as the winch against which all others are measured. If you have a serious expedition vehicle with an appropriate mount, there is no better choice." http://www.exploringoverland.com/overland-...3A31%3A40Z |

The first 8274 that I ever saw was bolted to the front of Colt Seavers truck. (for those old enough to remember) Looked awesome then, only ever owned 1. I had a G10 fitted that the winch from Mr Bowyers own truck, then went to the 8274, then sold the truck. Only winch I own now is a Red Winch ATOM. Just fitting it to my RZR 110 D250 SE HT
