Can someone please explain to me why these new turn fog-light-type lamps come on gently and go off gently? Ta.

Its so you can guess which way they are going as the actual indicators are normally obscured by the DRL's..........

The car makers are exploiting an allowance in the regs that allows a period of time for a lamp to reach full brightness. This was intended for old style filament bulbs which do take fraction of a second to fully heat up. The makers are applying that to LEDs which are virtually instant on, so they can incorporate scrolling effect, sequential illumination and softening the on/off. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Given that these days, the majority of drivers seem to think indicators are something for other people, I'm surprised you've actually seen them in operation....

^^ Another stupid and completely unnecessary feature which no right-minded authority would ever have allowed!

Pointless and potentially dangerous blingy crap that shouldn't have been approved.

To help illuminate the turn you are making
Or was this a wrong answer type competition? My confidence has been writing cheques that my abilities can't cash for years. |

If that is their stated purpose, then I think they fail at every level.
If their purpose is to confuse and irritate other drivers, they succeed admirably! |

illuminate low level when turning, allowing you to see any low level obstructions when turning, a bit like the swivel headlights on upper-spec cars but cheaper. 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html
