Rear diff options, Road use Ashcrosft ATB? on a Puma?
Hello


So my rear diff is being noiser and lift off power results in a weired sound, not too bad but guess will get worse..


I've been in touch with Nige @ Megasquirt.v8


I will admit, with the Puma I just drive it and send it to my mechanic when it needs things. So with these Diffs I have no idea whats what Smile Nigel did try to exsplain on the phone and basically option 3 is the best.

The cars as far as I can tell a keeper. Has anyone fitted one of these Ashcroft ATB's it appears it will drive much better, its far more upgraded and higher spec than my current LR setup.



Short Nose Rear: Option 1

New Short Nose Standard Casing +
New standard 3.54 CW&P
Fully stripped and rebuilt 4 pin center with Hi Flow washers and Bolts upgraded centre.
New Timken bearings, upgraded bolts, washers, etc (Ultra Build spec).
SuperFlange conversion + Pinion drive flange kit with new seal.
Fully assembled ready to fit.




Short Nose Rear: Option 2

New Short Nose PEGGED Casing +
New standard 3.54 CW&P
Fully stripped and rebuilt 4 pin center with Hi Flow washers and Bolts upgraded centre.
New Timken bearings, upgraded bolts, washers, etc (Ultra Build spec).
SuperFlange conversion + Pinion drive flange kit with new seal.
Fully assembled ready to fit.

New Short Nose PEGGED Casing +
New standard 3.54 CW&P
New Ashcroft ATB Center

I have Ashcroft ATBs front and rear and currently getting one fitted to my transfer box. My front one I had pegged by Nige.

Nige is very knowledgable about diffs it should be a marked improvement on the standard without having to remember to switch the locker on before you need it.

Unless its used alot off road it wont need pegging.

I have front middle and rear ATBs (front rear Nige ultrabuild ATBs) my 110 does about 350miles a week on tarmac and also used heavily off road. ATBs are fantastic on the road, so much grip and confidence in corners. Instagram @defender_ventures

I had both my ATB’s built by Nige, he puts a lot of attention into the details. Very Happy Very Happy

I can agree with bankz, 1. pegging is overkill for a road truck. 2. ATB’s give excellent ‘on road’ behaviour.

Yes pegging will increase the price significantly – think the casings are charged @ £220 (exchange) and £295 (outright)

Ashcroft built ATBs front and rear backlash reduced noticeably and my standard diffs had only low mileage at the time. Some have reported some torque steer with ATB in the front , I get a little bit when on and off the throttle, and more pull to centre when accelerating, rear is undetectable just a more planted feeling DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

My rear diff let go about a year ago with no warning (albeit with hindsight it was very noisy). I ended up going big on an ashcroft atb, pegged case plus hd half shafts and drive flanges. Perhaps the pegged case was unnecessary but overall the package has been great. I don't notice the atb during road driving (in a good way) and its perhaps the most usable type of locking diff for mostly road use. The driveline slack improved massively and what i wasn't expecting was it's so quiet by comparison to my old diff.

EDIT - i would add that i also spoke to Nige (very helpful and knowledgeable man) and got the feeling he was selling a potentially stronger / superior product, however it was more expensive and as i was already massively over 'budget' so went with the ashcroft one and as i was adding in half shafts and flanges it kind of made sense to get it all from one supplier.

nige at mega squirt has built a few over the years for us inc my current back diff. crown diffs have done some for us as well.

if i was upgrading then nige would get my vote.

pegged isn't needed for road use nor normal off roading. tyre size and power does affect this as does your driving style.

an atb diff is an easy fit and forget option in the back end i wouldn't fit one in the front for road use.

i prefer an arb or ashcroft locker for my own 90

As above I have a front, middle and rear and do 350m+ per week. I havnt noticed anything detrimental with the front ATB... Cant even feel the self centering people often mention. No torque steer either. Instagram @defender_ventures

possibly more noticeably on a 90 due to shorter length and has reduced over time, my ATBs have only so far done about 5k road miles and no off road other than grassy fields so relatively low mileage still, DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I have placed ATB Ashcroft front rear and central in Puma 110
I currently have 280 thousand km, 180 thousand walks with ATB !!!
They are totally transparent in use, in crowns very closed on asphalt a squeak of the front covers is felt.
And the famous CLONK is over !!!!
