Hello Martin and thank you so much for your swift reply, there should be nothing there? well in all my years I have never seen the rear of any gearbox unsupported? the odd thing is Martin there is a an internal thread in the gearbox and a hole in the support plate which would indicate that a bush should have or would have been fitted.
I cannot believe there was nothing ever fitted? Regards Ole Dave |

If you read through the thread I linked to, there's definitely not supposed to be anything there. It appears to be something designed on the crossmember but deleted before production started. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I’ve lost track of how many times has this question come up on here.
This is how it’s meant to be, nothing is missing. |

Hi Guys, well lol, I believe you all when you advise fresh air, sorry Martin I did not see the thread you put on your posting, Yep thats the area you show on your thread, thats odd and as you all say Rover in hindsight must have decided that it was not required, thank you all so much as it saves me trawling through anymore parts diagrams looking for a part that does not exist!!
Thanks again chaps for your advice and much valed help Regards Ole Dave |

Have a read through the second page of Martin's linked thread where I suggested trying a mounting in there. Not a good idea by all accounts! > 110 XS Double Cab

It stems from the prototypes that had different boxes before they settles on the mustang derived one currently in them.
It’s a very strong light rear end so doesn’t need the support. Hold my beer and watch this! |

perhaps you need a new Garage if they are not aware of this perhaps they don't know the quirks of all the Puma transmission oil levels! DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,
I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

Agreed. The previous owner of my 57 90 used a private garage to service his company vehicles and the LR. When I was changing all the oils soon after purchase I got covered in gearbox oil when I took the filler plug out. There must have been over 3 litres in there. Plus it was leaking. Life is short, so have your pudding first

Hi guys, I use this particular garage for a number of reasons, the first is I know the owner well as I worked with him for a number of years and know he would never rip me off as I am one of the family so to speak, the other reason I use them is the owner worked for Land Rover and was involved with Defenders daily albeit pre Puma, in many ways it was reassuring that they spotted it and reported a potential problem which turned out to be a non problem, I suppose I can blame myself as I personally should have known as I have had the vehicle 8 years.
While in the garage they also spotted at the same time that a brake pipe running over the rear axle was corroded at the points where its clipped to the axle, the old girl is going back in next week for that to be rectified with corrosion resistant brake pipes. My job when! The weather gets better is to replace the seals on the front axle half shaft areas as I am getting contamination of the axle EP90 oil with the one shot grease from the offside swivel hub, will do both sides though even though it's a diry messy job, thankfully some years ago i modified the single nylock bearing lock nut to the original Rover design of the adjustable 2 nut system while replacing a wrecked c/v joint which makes it's a lot easier to get the whole lot off. Thank you again chaps for all your help Ole Dave |
