Sudden and Catastrophic Engine Failure
Hi, I am new to the forum and searched through most of the pages but have been unable to find a similar problem. My apologies if I missed something.
I was driving my 2007 Puma 2,4, (with only 120,000km,) all was going perfectly when after about 30kms and coming out of a roundabout there was a sudden loss of power, an impressive knocking noise from the engine and loads of blue tinged smoke pouring out of the exhaust. The engine stopped but I managed to restart it and with lots of knocking and exhaust smoke got into a parking 50m away. The Landy was trucked to a highly respected Land Rover garage, (he has been servicing/ repairing my Landy ever since it was out of guarantee 9 years ago.) It has been there now for two months! The mechanic cannot work out what is wrong with it and is reluctant to start changing parts without a diagnosis. When we started the engine together, it fired up but with the knocking and lots of white smoke this time, and stopped running within a few seconds. On another occasion it would not start, but turning the engine over on the starter motor, there were no unusual noises. The last refuel was about 300km before and in the meantime it had been serviced and MOTed. The computer shows nothing untoward. A few days before the failure I thought I heard a slight knocking but it stopped after a few minutes. The oil showed no sign of water ingress. I had the breather pipe problem fixed a few years ago. Where I buy my diesel was rumoured to have had an algae problem, but I cannot believe this would cause a sudden failure. Any ideas would be most welcome.

Piston failed - early engines had faults with oil cooling jet under the crown IIRC

Timing chain stretched and jumped a tooth?

Sounds as if it will be cheaper to get a new or recon short engine. Recon is only about £1800 and probably cheaper than spending loads of time in diagnosis and rebuild. Something similar happened to my 2008 2.4 at 105,000 miles.

I would question how good the “highly respected” Land Rover garage is if they can’t work out in ten minutes that a pre 2008 2.4 with those symptoms has more than likely suffered usual piston cooling jet failure, let alone two months.

It would be highly unusual for a Puma with 120k km on the clock to suffer from the PCJ problem unless oil changes have been overlooked, and the manner of the failure as described is also not really consistent with this particular fault.

Personally I'd be more inclined to suspect a timing chain fault or possibly a catastrophic injector failure.

It is certainly disappointing that a dealer is unable to diagnose what is clearly a very major fault (it should be much easier to diagnose than a minor one) and speaks volumes about how useless dealers are now they no longer employ proper mechanics.

I can't belive LR garage is not able to diagnose your engine. Did they remove the head and looked at it? Defender 110 SW MY2011 2.4tdci decat, no EGR

It's already been very difficult to identify the correct break pads for my 110 MY 2012 - far too complicated ...

An entire engine must be way beyond their limits ... clearly ...


I'd have the whole engine changed. That's an easy job for them. Not so intellectual
