For the use you've described, I'd definitely go D4. The RRS is a lovely car but the D4 is a lot bigger inside. Darren

D4 does seem the better family wagon, but some extra luxury is hard to look away from..

D4
You will be able to stand the bike upright and so dirt and mud won’t be so much of an issue and it will only fall into a small area. You can design something to hold you bike upright with a tray to catch the mud underneath. With the RRS you would have to put the bike in on its side so making more mess and potentially damaging a disk rotor. If in the future you decide to go for an electric mountain bike the RRS will become a pain to load. The heavier weight of an Emtb is easier to handle when upright. Just my thoughts Good luck (jealous) ![]() |

D4, I have the D3 with basically the same body, super comfy and a carnivorous boot, has taken 5 adults plus all kit needed for camping over 3 weeks. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

my heads says buy something non lr for reliability but a good D4 with Warranty and good service history beats a rrs hands down for towing and practicality.
yes i ran d3 and d4 as dailies but the appalling local dealers and woeful reliability took me away from the brand for daily vehicles. i can happily say best decision my wallet made (said the wife) and now just defenders for the weekend. |

I have a full fat Range Rover.... the SDV8 is a dream to drive!
Ours is an Autobiography and the comfort levels are amazing, we have a tow bar and its easy to forget somethings on the back.. you can fit a bike in the back with the seats down but i usually just have a tow bar carrier when needed. The RRS IMO feels small inside compared to the D4 & FFRR and the split tailgate is something I couldn't live without now. Its so nice to be able to sit on the back. Way below budget would be a older L322 (2012) 4.4 TDV8 Range Rover.. I had a 07 previously and they are a superb luxury / do it all bus! |

It could be a difficult choice but you seem to have answered your own question - the fact that you require space for people and bikes then it surely has to be the D4
I've had a D3, D4 and currently a DS and have found them all to be reliable. Defender 90XS SW Mini Countryman Cooper S Morgan Plus 8 |

An RRS with V8 will be well in budget, but does it have to be an older vehicle?
Also what gearbox choices are you looking at? It it all 6 speed or are you into 8 speed options? |

Thanks for all the responses (apart from suggestion I might buy an ebike,
![]() A FFRR (including L322) would be nice, but although the cost of running a D4 aren’t low running one of those seems to take it to the next level. Not sure I could justify that to the finance committee ![]() Caravelle would be a sensible choice but this would replace my 110 so I still a Land Rover fox from somewhere! |

I can’t comment on the L405 yet, but actually 5 years of L322 ownership was painless really. I know a few people who own D4’s, RRS and FFRR and it really does seem to be luck of the draw in terms of running costs
![]() I sometimes regret selling the L322 it ticked so many box’s! |
