I'm not sure on the differences between the 2.2 but I had this on my 2.4 and it made it more of a nuscience than any thing else as the engine ran well otherwise. The cure in my case was to replace the stock air intake to a flexible silicone tube from the inner wing to the air filter. The air filter casing was modified as per the advice on the forum. It was almost like a petrol engine when the throttle butterfly closes and causes too much vacuum introducing a resistance. My only explanation is that without the turbo spinning as fast the engine has trouble sucking enough air. Consequently gear changes are smoother and more importantly quicker and without the inevitable clunk. I've since driven a few more Defenders and they all showed this characteristic......may not cure this on yours but for me it was £30 and few hours well spent. I started with nothing and still have most of it left!

My understanding is that it’s correct operation. The engine is held at a certain rpm during the gear change to improve shift smoothness, it avoids the revs dropping too much during the slooooow change! 2014 Keswick Utility 2.2

Just check round the back to make sure your brake lights are working, the fuse that controls the brake lights also controls the switch on the clutch master cylinder which if blown makes the revs hang on after the throttle is released. Blown fuse is often caused from towing a trailer with dodgy wiring! 15 plate 2.2SW XS

It is a built in feature of the 2.2 Puma Defender. Purpose is to make it more driveable. Not everybody likes it though. If you do a search on here with « rev hang » you get two pages of threads discussing this.
