Have you tried going in high and low range? It's possible it can be knocked into neutral there. It may be worth checking drive flanges too but unfortunately it sounds like it might be the Splined Intermediate shaft in the gearbox I think it's called.
(Anyone please feel free to mention the correct name if I'm wrong.) The splines wear, due to not being factory lubricated, then they wear they can just let go leaving you with no drive at all to all wheels. Out of interest what mileage are you currently on? The car has currently done around 50k miles - but the car had been standing still for a year almost
I changed the rear halfshafts and drive flages last month (to remove the clunking noise) and all oils/ filters including transmission and transferbox. Would i be able to change the splined intermediate shaft myself? or will it require a lift, and other specialist workshop tools? how much would it cost (ball part) from a workshop, any idea? |

Transfer box would need to come out I believe.
Unless you are very competent at spannering and have access to a lift I'd leave it to a reliable experienced garage. (I would if it was me as the parts are very heavy). I'm pretty sure the intermediate shaft is about £280 possibly a bit more for the parts exc labour. But varies depending on what has gone wrong when they investigate. I am no expert, many members on here are very knowledgable and have probably had the job done so can advise better. I believe if it is that, that there are two options Genuine or Ashcroft to choose from. What you have described does sound like the symptom a sudden loss of drive. put it in diff lock and see if it moves, if it dosnt move then intermediate shaft is most likely cause, if it does move put it out of diff lock and ask someone to look underneath when stationary and chocked, put in gear and slowly release the clutch, if 1 of the prop shafts are turning and the car isnt moving then its a diff or drive flange/cv joint at the end that has the turning shaft DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

There is still no drive in diff lock - before this happened, the car made a grinding noise somewhere in the shafts. It might be unrelated - as i suspect the front UJ might need to be replaced.
Is changing the intermediate shaft something that can be done at home - car only raised on jack stands? |

wont be uj broken, uj will result in the shaft detaching and being fairly obvious and will still drive in diff lock
there are some threads on here regards changing the shaft, it is a DIY job for a competent person but there are a few tools/workrounds required suggest a search on here there was a procedure explained step by step from one of the land rover magazines DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

Diff lock light is on with no drive?
Its def in a gear? You can hear gbox rotating? If so sounds like time to take t box off and check the intermediate shaft. If that's ok, check clutch. I did mine on floor of my garage, no lift. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

Sound like another scandalous output shaft failure. Many on this forum. Mine was a £900+ main dealer repair. Fortunately covered under warranty.
