I'm not the expert in that matter, but I did some studies looking for the options recently (including on this forum). My impression is any of 2-din can be installed. Some of them (e.g. Pioneer) requiring small modification of vent pipes location as they are quite deep. Other popular option is Alpine (there is a model which has 2-din screen while 1-din body behind). Personally I would rather look for specific functionalities you need and features/price factor. E.g. CarPlay/Android wireless option vs usb cable is making price a double etc. Then finally I was looking for the design, like having buttons on the driver's side of the screen. I would assume the cheap no-name units from far East will do the work as well, although no clue about potential quality issues.

I have been looking at this Kenwood - worried about fitment but it has wireless car play and physical volume buttons whilst being under £500

I just watched the short review of this unit by John Glynn on Youtube - looks good, but it's a shame it's so chunky - could be difficult to fit?

And possibly the clock? Think I've read on here that large units are an issue but I dunno, never fitted a double din though I am tempted by wireless Carplay & reversing camera uses.

Just to update this thread since I last posted, I’ve decided to go for the JVC KW-M745DBT unit. The thing that pushed me towards this - apart from knowing its a fairly popular unit amongst owners - is the offer that Halfords have going on at the moment.
The offer - I think - is an absolute steal! The stereo itself is £359 but for an extra £90 they will fit the unit as well as supply ALL the auxiliaries, harnesses, DAB antennas AND the facia panels!!! So for a total of £449 I’ll have the unit installed and warranted! I placed the order before Christmas but as the Defender has been in the body shop having warranty work carried out, I’m yet to have it installed, but speaking to the guys at Halfords they seem knowledgable about what’s involved (cutting the existing facia, cutting the hole for the additional control panel etc...) They were even super helpful when I placed the order as I wasn’t sure if I wanted the gloss black panel or the matte grey... so they ordered both in for me! Hope this helps a few people Last edited by K.M on 28th Jan 2020 8:18pm. Edited 1 time in total |

This JVC head unit is proving to be a good direct replacement for the Alpine:
