Having a little look around at tuned Td5s on youtube, and having a quick think on the way into work today whilst doing 3100 RPM on the motorway and thinking...
Whats the rev limit on td5, both Physical, and as far as you would reasonably take it? I did 3500 once and boy i don't think i'd do that again... But then having a look at the specs of a 15p in a defender it does the full 122Hp at 4850 RPM. Surely can't be safe... What it the main limiting factor in the td5 engine? why have we never really got above #210 Hp and even then unreliably... Is it a materials thing where the block, pistons an rods can't handle this? it is a matter of stroke length? air induction? All the above? Just curious, seeing as how much HP can be achieved from just A map and curious to know the TD5s limits. Slightly left-field thoughts and musings:
It's perfectly safe at 3500. The engine is very capable of running at high revs all day long, but the driver is less so capable because of the noise vibration and harshness. The better insulated Td5 in a D2 bears testament to this. Have you experienced a Wright Off Road acoustic mat or similar? On recommendation I put one in my Td5 and found it to be cheapest way of accessing the power in a Defender without discomfort. I'm not actually interested in actually upping my power (for the moment) but just curious. Still interested in the matt though will give it a look thanks. I'm on IG: https://www.instagram.com/osloblue42/

Loads can be done in terms of soundproofing.
Mines lizardskined throughout, foam on top, rubber and carpet as the finish where possible. Happily sits at 70/80 without going deaf. Instagram @defender_ventures Empire Tuning - Agent |

we used to run one around 200bhp and that worked well with a bit of reliability in it, much more than that and things go bang quick in my experience. Cheers

Mine does regularly his max revs, I know it is above 4500 rpm but most off the time I am not looking at the rev counter on moments like that. Like here:

I’ve taken my 2005 TD5 110 to 4,000 rpm on occasions, and it seems fine at that speed in fact smoother than it is at 3,000 but there seems little benefit in going much past 3,000 in normal driving.
Unlike my Ferrari where the 3.4 litre V8 got into its stride at 6,000 and was happy to hit 9,000 rpm in the intermediate gears. Slightly different vehicle though. |

I'll happily wring mine out past 4000rpm once warmed up when I'm in a hurry, it makes a great noise too.

Very much so. Ive hit mac revvs in high, 1st, 2nd,3rd been high in 4th n 5th but no sure how high. Hit the limit in every gear in low.
That said TD5s make peak power sround 3000rpm Instagram @defender_ventures Empire Tuning - Agent |

I am not that interested in peak power more in peak torque. And if you need the torque better be aboe the peak torque rpm range. If you are above the peak torque rpm and your tyres areasking more torque the revs drop and you get more torque available, if you are below peak torque revs and your tyres are asking more torque it will stall.
So if in doubt, rev it out. ![]() And yes without Cat and middle demper it is loud at 4000 + rpm on full power. I assume you are talking about off road driving and competition use.
If you regularly drive a Defender TD5 like that on the road it’s going to do about 15mpg and you’ll likely need a new transmission before long. |

On and off road for me. Never broken a part on tarmac.
Few bits off road but that was down to poor driving on my part ![]() Averages 25mpg and weighs 2.7t Instagram @defender_ventures Empire Tuning - Agent |

I was thinking generally just for tuning.
Recent average was 25mpg When I was doing m25 daily I averaged 32mpg by drafting artics at 50mph... I'm on IG: https://www.instagram.com/osloblue42/ Current: TD5 '110 "Lucinda" Thread here: https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic62562.html ![]() |
