Sadly it is normal these days, and not just on Landrovers, Mercedes sprinters are the same. My puma blows warmish air even when on the cold setting without aircon, and also the two outlets tend to have noticeably different temperatures. 2011 110 USW

Most cars (non climate control) will let in air when moving through the heater vents as air is still forced through the matrix by the movement of the car. However Landies don't have a heater inlet pipe at the front of the car to cause this as it's mounted on top of the left wing (RHD). Mine doesn't do it, when it's cool outside there is no heat coming through the vents unless I switch the fan on You may have a faulty temp selector dial, do you get any variation in the temp at all when using the temp dial? When using the circulation/outside air lever do you get a satisfying clunk when selecting? Have you checked the bulkhead wiring bungs are fitted as the heat could be coming from the engine bay through the bulkhead? Are the 2 drainage teets fitted on the heater air inlet box, may be a cause for the warm air from engine bay being forced into heater manifold. Or it could be the fact you live in a hot climate and that's the air temp anyway. Anyways I would take it back to the dealer to fix as it will be in warranty. These options are just me thinking out loud, so if you cant get to the dealer I would take the centre dash panel off and check the heater controls are moving when you turn them and basically just visually check the heater system from the dash to under the bonnet.
Do as BigMike says and check the coolant level but the normal indication for low coolant is the heater not blowing hot air just cold. Then again do you get cold air in Kenya? And nice Landy by the way |

It's more as a check to see the engine isn't running hot as we all know the standard temp gauge has too much range without the needle moving. If it's hot then warm air could easily be moving into the passenger area. if the header tank level is normal then it can be partially discounted but doesn't neccessarily mean there isn't a heat/overheat issue.
After a decent run I'd also take off the oil filler cap and have a sniff, the header tank cap too. on the latter, if it smells a little like curry then that would indicate excess heat. |

I would check on it. Here in we get up to 35ºC and the outside air feels a bit over that as it passes through non isolated inlet tubes beside the turbo and exhaust manifold before reaches the cabin. What engien oil is supposed to be used over there? Puma 110" SW

You will have the factory fitted automatic dropping rear windows. This is fitted at no charge and should be ideal for warm Kenyan conditions in helping keep you cool.If you are not sure you have this feature or not you will notice it while driving as your rear passenger door windows will open ever so slightly of their own accord. Just remember to check when you park up somewhere. What tyres are fitted to your vehicle? Welcome to the family and the forum. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Thanks for all the feedback guys
Been all over today (on road and some off road) - what a beast, love the effortless torque! I'm in Nairobi now, with temperatures always between 18~26°C - very rarely hotter or colder and not by much (thanks to 1700m altitude on the equator). The temperature of air coming into the cabin from the vents is definitely heated from the engine, as it's always nice & cool during the start of the ride, but starts getting fiery after 30mins of driving.
Coolant level looks fine, spot on the mark. Engine does feel moderately hot after long drives.
Yeah there is an obvious variation. In the morning, on cool setting it's perfectly cool, on hot setting it's hot. After an hour of driving, on cool setting it's warm, on hot setting it's like a nuclear reactor!
No i haven't, frankly not sure how to go about it. The good news is that the selector controlling where the air comes out works fine. ie. the airflow follows the right output routing (big round vents only / windscreen only / footwell + dashboard) - only it also does the same by trickling in the heat through whatever's been selected when the fan is still off.
Where do i find these? This sounds very likely tho, as it's definitely hot air from under the bonnet finding its way into the cabin.
Thanks, will check.
The car still has whatever the assembly line put in. Still haven't had a chance to find out exact brands, though i'm advised fully synthetic engine oil, that apparently only Shell petrol stations stock. Thanks again for all the cool comments & feedback guys. Spudfan, it's rolling on standard Yokohama tyres that come default on the steel rims. They feel quite alright on & off the road. |

Hey man.. sweet wheels!!
Mine's living in the Masai Mara already.. will put some pics up as soon as i have managed to get out a bit.. Just get onto that car with a socket set, and pick up a folding torx wrench set from nakumatt, and go over every nut and bolt and screw you can reach inside and and outside/under the car.. Whatever you do.. don't stress out too much over it.. enjoy it! Cheers dude! ps: ....where did you get the info that the Kenya CKD's from KVM don't have the EGR valve? I'm pretty sure they do, but don't mind being corrected if i'm wrong.. I hear it every time the engine is shut down...sounds like a dog panting about 5 times real fast.. From reading on this forum, i understand thats the EGR self cleaning.. ?? Does yours not do that??? 2011 110 Tdci 1982 Range Rover V8 Classic (Gone) |

Had the same problem and wrongly assumed it may be normal. It's not. The problem in my case was the heater outer cable which was not properly secured and sliding at the valve end. It's a very basic design and I suspect many will be affected. Heater was either on or off but never fully off. Now it's adjustable and no heat at all when set to cold. |
