Very good thread for anyone interested in this sort of stuff:

Interesting stuff. I do like a bit of obscure military vehicle history. The concept wasn't new though - powered trailers were being used in prototype form behind 101's in 1969 and were famously used and abandoned by the Joint Services Trans Sahara expedition in 1975. They never went into production though, due to cost and complexity problems. Darren

Powered trailers, Only saw a civilian one up on the A66 near Bowes back in the early 1970's one winters morning. The front axel lost grip in the snow and the trailer pushed on causing the unit to jack knife. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to ![]() Richard |

I read about that, and apparently the trick was to select reverse and the powered trailer would pull the 101 back onto it's wheels again.! |

A few years ago there was a civvy Multidrive RTW that I used to see regularly in the Blandford/Wimborne are, but I have seen it for quite a while now. A good system in most respects.

Many years ago working on a farm we had a trailed lime spreader with a power axle. The idea was to use it on a Massey Ferguson tractor and put the drive through the Power Take Off shaft. MF's had a ground drive set up on the PTO where the PTO shaft was driven from the gearbox of the tractor rather than the Live Drive which was driven via the engine.
The difference was that whichever way you put the control lever, in Ground Drive then the speed of the tractor would denote the speed of the PTO so the faster you went the faster the PTO, in Live Drive you would set the speed of the PTO then alter the tractors speed to match what you were driving by the PTO. The little drawback to this was that young Carlos Fandango types found that if you put the tractor gearbox into neutral and put the PTO into Live drive then you could use the driven axle on the trailer to push you along down the road. Road speed was improved greatly and it was nothing to be bowling down the road with your teeth clenched catching flies at speeds nearing 40mph. When you think that tractors in those days had a job to get anywhere near 20mph it was a little invigorating ![]() |
