I was told the other day that you can't just turn off the puma engine, you have let it tick over "for a while". Apparently not doing so causes damage?
My dealer never mentioned this and I can't see anything in the owners handbook, is it just a myth? Sorry if this should be an obvious one but every other car I have driven was either an old NA diesel Landrover or had a petrol engine. In an ideal world yes you should let her idle for a little while before turning off.
The turbo gets crazy hot whilst regular driving and the bearings in it are cooled down by oil passed through it. When you just stop and turn the engine off, the oil flow stops and therefore no cooling for the bearings which can result in damage. By allowing the engine to 'tick over' for a while keeps the il flow to cool the bearings down. 3 answers to this: 1- Sit in the car with it running for a min before turning off. 2- Buy a turbo timer which will auto shut down your engine after a min or so. 3- (Which I do)- When you are approaching your destination, slow down, and don't load the engine much so the turbo has a rest, then allow to idle for 10 seconds before turning off. The manual says idle for 15 - 30 seconds (depending on recent load) but its a precaution more than a neccessity. there is no way the bearings are going to run dry if you just turn it off - it doesn't spin for long enough.

Glyn has got it bang on as per, if your thrashing up a main road and want fuel don't just pull up at the pump 70mph to nothing then tuun off let it run for a min while you find your wallet ect or decide what mega expensive coffee you want, but if you have just poodled round then stopped reversed on to the drive ect ect no need to run the turbo down or cool it, it will be already.
The boss at one of the haulage firms i used to work for years ago used to litteraly go bright red jumping up and down at drivers who used to come howling into the yard full chat stop at the office click off and jump out. you could hear the manifolds clicking with the heat. My old Audi URR Quattro used to glow red hot and was visible through the grille and radiator. Audi got fed up replacing the manifolds and turbos which melted the oil seals due to the heat remaining after switch off. Nothing seems to change? 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

This "let it idle down" is a relict and only under certain circumstances true in the current century. If you push the engine hard and drive it full power over a german autobahn (as some do), then yes, you have to let it cool down before you stop the engine. If you just do regular driving and slow down your driving mood before you reach you destination, it is no longer necessary (and that since quite some time). Just take a guess what "wait until idle down" means for start-stop automatics.

my current steed for work is a passat blue motion with stop start technology!
85 mph all the way from Grimsby back to bBath, off at m4/m32 junction down to the lights then stop at the traffic lights......engine switches off!!! all these ideas are great for emissions but would you want one out of warranty? can't see it doing the turbo any good, i know there water cooled etc. but a little mechanical sympathies always good |

How do you put up with that, i was given an eco Freelander 2 at the last service, and every time i stopped it turned its self off, utterly anoying, turned the system off fill up with fuel back on again turn off again go to the shops back on again, left my foot on the clutch eventually hated it would never own one !!! I've had several Freelanders that did that as courtesy cars, IIRC you can turn off the eco engine auto shut off feature. Steve. Dad's second one (he had three) actually caught fire from that issue! The other two were great; the last one was a Treser version - very 80s but pretty nippy. I have driven a couple of loan cars BMs with auto stop/start - I HATE it! Luckily ours hasn't got it. I leave our 110 idling for 10-20 seconds after stopping and switching off even if I've only moved it up the driveway a bit! Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion. |
