Retain it ASAP. Hopefully before the insurance company starts their paperwork
I was also given this advice for if your vehicle is stolen. SORN it and retain the reg. This helps it flag up on anpr too 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Just to add to this, a friend of mine had her car stolen around 2 years ago and her plate
was a 1 digit number + her 2 initials, she had had this plate for years and had also turned down a couple of offers to buy it with a value potentially exceeding the car it was currently registered on, she retained the number with the DVLA at a cost similar to a transfer between vehicles, from memory when the vehicle was written off by the insures (as it was never seen again) this allowed it's transfer to a new vehicle, probably with a follow on cost for that step, so she got the plate essentially in a 'holding position' until things had sorted themselves out. The take away from this is act first as I think 'technically' no one owns a number plate, they have just obtained the right to use it and transfer it until it's surrendered. Having had experience of a third parties insurance company loss adjuster put S.H.M.B.O.'s private plate on an auction site prior to any paperwork being signed, you need to act fast by giving notice to the insurance company that you are retaining the private plate , this can be done by phone backed up ether by email of snail mail. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to  us off.

Back in the day a friend of mine lost his private reg when his car got written off.
Months/years later (I forget) the reg was back up for sale on DVLA website! > 110 XS Double Cab |

Worth even MORE is 2 initials + the number 1 (i.e. AA 1 is worth more than the order 1 AA which I have). No names, no pack drill, but I've a mate who a little while ago acquired his initials + 1. "Wow, how much is that worth?" "A hell of a lot more than the car (a Merc)" "How did you get it?" "It was on a written-off car for which my company handled the insurance". I've a couple of numbers on retention (3 and 6), those actually on vehicles are covered by a caveat to the Insurance Policy: "Assuming no claim is made under Section 8, personal registration plate cover, then we would not retain ownership of the plate in the event of a theft or total loss" Peter |

approx 15 years ago we had our toyota hilux stolen with our reg T111FAB, took us 16 months to get it back and able to use.
It is now on my D4 |

As a precaution, when taking out or renewing my car insurance I tell the insurer that I wish to retain the reg number if the car is ever written off or stolen, that way they know on day one what your position is. I have had 2 cars written off after being hit by other drivers & on both ocassionally immediately put the number on retention & no drama with the insurance.
Putting a number on retention is so easy these days as its all done online - unless there is any issue with the car it's on like my old 110DCPU which apparently hadn't been taxed or SORN'd by the previous owner so flagged as potentially owing RFL, that meant I had to use a paper form after calling DVLA & explaining when I bought the car & when I taxed it, retention certificate issued with a few days. |
