Seen quite a few of these being released over the last year, and just curious if anyone knows the back story to them, why they're being cast when the vehicles are very much still in service (I think?).

The vehicles were never a great success, most units held them in reserve and never used them if they could. I think some were modified for use abroad so this might of included swapping the rear pod to something more practical for its final location.
As for selling parts for vehicles still in service I have often found parts I’ve needed for in service vehicles on various sales sites however my stores have said the part is on back order as the military have none in stock  90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

The panther was due to be the replacement for the wolf & wmik.
It wasn’t a bad vehicle but someone decided to fit a RWS to be fired from inside the vehicle which isn’t a bad idea if your t trying to defend yourself but not great if your tying to kill people. The RWS is just too precise and doesn’t allow for fine adjustment quickly or even decent situational awareness. Which is a better defence than firing from protection. When we bought cougars, one of the first things we did it rip our RWS and add in an armoured turret. And only mine roller vehicles retaining the RWS because who wants to man a turret if your job is to make thing explode in front of your own vehicle. Same goes for husky. This resulted in the panther being fitted with radios, radars, antennas and video masts as a second line vehicle rather than a combat vehicle like the jackal for use as command, intelligence or Other support roles. I think the use of the rear cargo area was better used open like on husky and mastiff cargo variants. Hence the sale.
