If replacing I would consider a disco drop arm conversion. The track rod end is much easier to replace going forward

I wouldn't consider it, I'd just go ahead and replace it with Gwyn's kit.
The amount of play taken out of the system when I did it was incredible. Ed 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |

Gwyn Lewis' company makes all sorts of uprated parts for landrovers. They do a full steering upgrade kit including the discovery drop arm and heavy duty drag link, track bar and track rods ends

Why do you need to replace the drop arm ?

The ball joint needs replacing. It seems it’s easier to replace the whole drop arm rather then try to assemble the joint in place. It’s not too expensive either.

That's exactly why the disco drop arm is a good upgrade. Just a simple track rod to replace. Turns it into an easy job

With the correct installation tool as well as the more common removal tool it is as quick as changing a track rod end (ten minutes maximum) and you don’t mess up your steering geometry if you don’t get the track rod end at exactly the same length as it came out.

The main benefit I saw is that the track rod setup has less unwanted range of movement in it compared to the Swan neck style which results in more responsive steering. Ed
