Mine was a U1200 (120hp) but had an uprated Turbo / fuel pump so put out 150hp.
It's a 5.6L 6 Cyl diesel however so the torque is enormous. I used to get 12mpg but I've heard of people getting nearer to 20, Would keep up with normal traffic up to 50mph but then ran out of gearing (even though it had 16 forward and 16 reverse!). I put the bigger tyres on which meant it would do just shy of 60. You can upgrade the diffs to 'fast road' to get higher gearing. The U1000 / older non turbo models will struggle to maintain 50 however. On the road, you needed to pay attention! It's high, wide, short, left had drive (usually) and running on chunky tyres. Need to be aware that the vast majority are registered as Agricultural vehicles (in effect a tractor) which is quite restrictive in terms of speed limits and means you can't go on the motorway. Doesn't need to be MOT'd and has free road tax however. If you want to have a bit more freedom, you probably need it registered as a Private HGV. It then have to pass an HGV MOT test however and usually require a number of upgrades to do this. Heres a before and after shot of mine after I bought it.

This was announced during the marque’s Unimog on the Farm roadshow, which demonstrated the merits of the coveted UHE and UGE implement carriers at four UK locations. Each event hosted 13 examples, all kitted out for a different job. There were also heritage models, and others with bespoke aftermarket modifications from Unimog specialist bodybuilder AC Price Engineering. Attendees could then drive and sample the Unimog in different scenarios. The line-up included short wheelbase implement carrier variants such as U423, and long-wheelbase units like U5023. The UGE implement carriers were fitted with Mulag grass and hedge trimmers, Schmidt snow ploughs, and one towed a Krone forage wagon. Unimog bodies can be easily swapped, by removing four pins from the rear of the chassis. For example, a flatbed can be lifted off and replaced by a gritting body or water tank. R-Oil, producer of rapeseed oil near Stow-on-the-Wold, fits its 64-plate U400 with a 4,000-litre tank body in spring. During the harvest season, the Unimog is used to carry around 1,000 tonnes of rapeseed to the firm’s pressing plant. Alongside the claimed financial benefits Unimogs have over agricultural tractors, they are registered as trucks, so don’t require a permit for UK motorway usage either. They are serviceable every six weeks or at 1,400 hour intervals. Currently there are four Unimog dealerships spread across the UK, including Mercedes-Benz Lloyd in Carlisle, and South Cave Tractors in East Yorkshire. Mercedes-Benz will send out mechanics to any UK operator if problems do occur however. Unimog sales manager Michael Bateman said: “The number of Unimogs we’ve sold this year has risen to 200 which includes those sold to defence. Hopefully sales will continue to rise through events such as this.” South Cave is just up the road from me.  |

They are brilliant vehicles, I haven't owned one, but I have trained drivers to drive them off road, but the ones we used were mega expensive and probably more expensive than any of the ones at the Unimog in Agriculture events this year! I'm told it would have cost you a cool £250k to buy one of these, they have an insulated 'cherry picker' to allow their operators to work on live power lines!
