2008 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 SW Galway Green

Cubby Box - oh BLIMEY

So I thought I'd take out my cubby box. The old one is tatty and I want to put in a new one.
Four torx bolts - I mean how hard can it be ?
Well one bolt came out no problem
The other three bolts are now turning neither tightening nor untightening

I crawling underneath and seems as if they go into these little tubes with threads inside that are part of the floor
I can't quite work out whats gone wrong (I didn't force it)
And not being very mechanical I don't know how to get then out now

please someone tell me what to do

Those are rivnuts and it’s not unusual for them to spin.

Use a pair of mole grips from underneath to hold them whilst someone unscrews the torx bolt from above.

Google home made rivnut tool and make one to tighten the offending rivnuts before reinstalling

Right got the cubby box out.

I have a question though.

Can I locktite the rivnuts to stop them turning ? Or locktite and then reinstall with homemade installation tool.

Which locktite should I use ?

Hi

I have put superglue under the head of the rivnut then tighten it again.

Leave for 24 hours before putting the bolt through it.

Took me two and a half hours to get mine out. LR didn't do a good job of fixing them. I gave mine a squeeze before refitting. Peter.

Dont use loctite on any part of that. All you will do is make the rivnut spin next time. Hold my beer and watch this!

2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 USW Stornoway Grey

I had this a few days ago as the dinitrol treatment to the underside of the vehicle had got on the cubby box securing bolt threads. I was able to use an electric gun and pull on the box as i unwound them, came out eventually. To tighten the rivnuts you wind in a bolt with a couple of washers and a nut on . Hold the bolt head with a spanner then wind the nut down on to the washers and rivnut. Wind it up tight and it will re-crush the rivnut onto the access plate. Clean the threads out and use plenty of copaslip for next time.

I cut my bolts down as they are massively over length and just fill with dirt and crud Hold my beer and watch this!
