Full travel reached on a medium sized bump is very unlikely. Unless you are going serious speed. Are they the +2 version?
As for the mounting: can you find any damage on the shock body from touching something? You probably checked it, but top and bottom bushes ok? I have never had shocks make strange sounds from 'bedding in' (10 years workshop foreman in a car dealership), when they begin to make knocking sounds, something has gone wrong inside. I would mount the original rear shocks again and see if the noise is gone. Very easy job and you directly rule out all other suspension components. (You can allso do it side by side to see is its left rear or right rear) |

Addition:
If you have found the shock that's causing it by swiching 1 to original, you can then swich them over left to right again to see if that side doesnt have the knock either with the 'good' fox shock, then everything is ruled out and you need a warranty on the shock. |

Cheers EVdV. It appears to be from both sides, there is no visible damage and it doesn’t look like I’m getting close to full travel. The drop links aren’t hitting the axle. There is no lift on the vehicle, standard height springs all round.

Just a sanity check but might be worth checking your upper link bushes because they can cause that kind of sound.
It's surprising how quickly bushes can deteriorate and those like the upper-link are quite difficult to detect when they're on the way out. To put it in perspective I was underneath my 110 just before heading to some lanes in the Lakes last weekend and all bushes looked OK. After the first day laning that was the bushes completely shot. Thanks Sako, I’ll check them. Been to see local Indy today who reckons that the supplied lower bushes are too stiff, limiting articulation on the rear axle. Has given me some standard LR ones to try. When the top bolt is off and the shocker at full extension, it takes a mighty effort to pull it of the top mounting due to how stiff the bottom is so defiantly worth a try and quick enough to test.

Easy way to check (easier with a mate) is handbrake on, wheel-brace on and rock the vehicle back and forth with the wheel brace while having a look at the upper A frame links. Ed

Right then, fit ten standard LR damper lower bushes and it is Loads better. Not yet perfect but night and day in terms of ride quality and the knocking now is only on very big hits.

I’m also running the Fox 2.0 remote res shocks and I concur with this problem! Have yet to get to the bottom of it... I I have replaced the a frame ball joint along with all bushes and still it’s there...??

Interesting to know it’s not just me! Fitting standard lower bushes made a huge difference. This weekend I checked all the other bushes and a frame ball joint and found nothing. The ARB isn’t catching, the spring coils are not touching. I’m not bottoming out. As long as I don’t barrel into speed bumps like an idiot, the noise has gone and the ride is superb.

That might be next on my list to do then... I’ll look at changing them but just very odd as something I defintly did not have before installing them... are you running the adjustable dampers or regular?

Just fixed damping, not adjustable. I would say to order a set of the standard lower bushes just in case, they are only £1 or so each. Your might be fine, it’s all down to the geometry of the axle path as to how much articulation you need. These defenders aren’t known for their tight tolerances, so what is necessary for one may not be necessary for the other.
