Puma 2.4 conked our now won’t start
An anyone offer any suggestions to help me get my 2009 2.4 tdci running again?

It’s had an intermittent speedo for the last week and I had been planning to open the hatch under the cubby box and inspect the wiring to the sender on the transfer box.

However, yesterday the engine died without warning and has not fired since. I get a single cough if it’s been sat for a long time but the rest of the time it just cranks and cranks.

The first thing I did was open the drain on the fuel filter and I’d say a good 100ml of water came off before any diesel so this is perhaps a good indication that the issue is fuel related.

I’ve checked all fuses, re-seated inspected and then swapped around relays under drivers seat. Checked earth straps onto bulkhead under bonnet. Put a jump lead between transfer box and battery neg. I’ve tried disconnecting the battery then shorting battery cables. I’ve tried re-seating connector onto back of instrument binnacle.

My basic code reader shows no faults. I’ve removed, inspected, cleaned and refitted cam position sensor. The code reader shows rpm when the engine is cranking.

I’m in a very remote location but there’s a local mechanic who’s prepared to take a look, he suggested straight away it’s likely to be the water in the fuel so I’m inclined to let him at it and see if he can get it to go.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Many thanks in advance, Mat

Hi Mat,

I had a similar issue to you; checked everything you have listed (made sure the starter was functioning correctly too) also replaced the fuel filter without getting it started.

Due to lack of diagnostic software, I had to concede and took to the local diesel specialist, and they found it was the VCV at fault - may point you in the right direction? This also remedied a smokey cold start I had, did you have have this symptom before your problem?

Best of luck!

Hi Blue, thanks for your reply.

I know the VCV is easily damaged by water in the fuel. I’ve replaced mine twice now, once with a pattern part that failed after a couple of years then more recently with a genuine denso one. Both times symptoms were rough idle hesitation when getting on the gas,for example when pulling out of a junction - I think more pronounced when the engine was cold.

Did yours just suddenly stop running and then not stat despite cranking over (like I described above) or did you have other engine running issues before it stopped starting?

Cheers, Mat.

this might be a red herring but if you've had a dodgy speedo my guess would be the connection at the rear of the speedo binnacle is loose. my understanding is this is key to the entire ecm / electronics sysstems and if it's now become disconnected my understanding is it won't start for love nor money until reconnected.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge with be along soon to confirm or otherwise.

good luck.

The penultimate start before the issue was definitely strained, I incorrectly dismissed it as a battery problem.

If the instrument pack wasn’t connected you wouldn’t get cranking.

Is the instrument pack reading correctly before you start cranking - is the temperature gauge reading ok and the glow and MIL operate correctly?  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Had a very similar issue myself, but the give away for me was the temperature gauge rising when cold, had the same symptoms as you and it turned out to be the cylinder head temperature sensor Very Happy Very Happy
A little tricky to change I am pretty sure I sliced a notch out of a spare socket to help but still certainly a DIY job and quite cheap Very Happy

A nice easy one to check but make sure it’s been sat and cold for a while

If you've had water in the system, change out the VCV for good measure.

I also encounter the rough engine with hesitation before going dead then would just crank and not fire. If you have the priming tool, re-prime the fuel system. It's what I did when mine when it did all this followed by a new VCV. Also check that your fuel filter is fit on snug and not wobbling even when tight.

Also check the connections on your instrument cluster as well.

As above, if you have the slightest reason even to suspect water (or the diesel bug, which will follow water) in the fuel, then purge the system of water and dirty fuel, flush clean fuel through the pipes, and replace the VCV as a matter of routine.

How do you un-clip the IPAC? The clip is partially broken on mine and I have no idea why, or how it was.
I think it has by its self, as I'm not aware of anyone touching it. Rolling Eyes $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Hi All, thanks for your replies, I’ve not been getting email notification so hadn’t seen them until now.

I got a tow off Rassay and on to Skye with another defender, much to the delight of the lads operating the ferry who all run landcruisers! A local mechanic is not on it in his spare time and believes the first place to look if fuel due to how much water came off the bottom of the fuel filter.

Regarding the IPAC, it’s been working fine other than the intermittent speedo. The connector on the back is solid, positive and undamaged. There was on one occasion whilst trying to start the engine after the conk-out a full red reading from the temp gauge which hasn’t returned. This steered me to check all fuses and relay connections which appeared good. I checked the relays were clicking over with ignition switch use and I swapped the back relays over.

I believe the local mechanic is sourcing a priming tool and that’s his next move, I’ll suggest we put a new VCV on it as you’ve suggested.

Fingers crossed, thanks again.

The saga continues...

Local mechanic re-primed the fuel system and reported that their was no sign of water in the fuel system. He was injecting fuel into the pump and confirmed it coming out of the return line. At that point he gave up so i had the vehicle recovered to my local garage back home where its now been for a week.

An auto electrician came to look at it yesterday and drew a blank, he thinks that it's 'something mechanical' and gave up...

My next thought its to get hold of a tool that can disable the factory immobilizer, to rule that out.

Shes alive...ALIVE

Recon fuel pump from PF Jones fitted today and i've seen a video of the engine running!

So there we go, with no warning what so ever, the fuel pump died over five weeks ago.

Question now is was that just old age (10 years - 147,000 miles) or could a bad batch of fuel or contaminated fuel have seen it off?

Plan now is to drain the tank and inspect what comes out, change the fuel filter and check the fuel lines for any leaks where Censored could be getting sucked in. Love to hear anyones wisdom on that. Also considering fitting an under-bonet additional filter, but perhaps thats overkill?

Thanks. And hurrah!
