My wife is thinking she’d like one to work on shoots, I am also quite fond of the idea of getting one and training. We have 2 Labrador’s at the moment.
A friend of mine has one and he’s great temperament and a nice dog, my brother in law has one too and I can honestly say if it was my dog I’d of shot it by now! Only thing the wife stipulates is that she’d like a red one. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Lab photos (I know I know) |

In the same place as you AJC, two labs and thinking working cocker to add into the mix. My son loves going beating, so it would be ideal. I’ve managed to train my labs to a standard they can pick up and come on the peg fine, but a cocker is a different ball game, and therefore an interesting challenge!!

It's a difficult one, I would happily train the spaniel, but would it then work for my wife I don't know.
I could advise her and help her in training. But I don't think she'd take me on board with what I say, she questions things I say/do in terms of advice but would take it as gospel from some one else |

Not sure I've ever seen a cocker sit still on a shoot.
They just quiver like they are about to explode. |

Your Sprocker is a lovely looking dog. I used to have a border collie many years ago, could not tire him out. I often think about another dog but I’m not sure I could commit to one these days. |

If you train to the whistle then the training should be pretty transferable, but it depends how your wife backs it up. My wife lets ours get away with more, so as a result he is generally a bit less attentive to her commands. For example, when I recall on the whistle he stops what he is doing and returns at 100mph. When my wife has him he comes back slower and might stop for a pee on the way! He will always come back, but now with the same enthusiasm. |

Even on a dank old morning like today, a walk in the woods with ours is enough to put a smile on your face...

Wow. She’s sitting still.
6 years of training has paid off. |
