I've used Wedge in southamton (before they were in the "wedge" group IIRC)
It was for a chassis one time, then a chassis and some side rails, they came and collected once, and the other time I took it down there. quite helpfull as I recall. Back when I did it (nearly 10 years back for the last item), there was a minimum amount, so you'd probably be best to get it all together as one lump. Yes, make sure vent holes are drilled... my current 110 chassis is an ex military armoured one, so has lots of extra plates welded onto it.... some of which are now slightly balloon shaped as I didn't reaise about how damn hot galvanising is... it just expanded the steel like it was rice paper. |

we use pillar wedge near us and they are very good with a turn round od 7-21 days depending on how busy they are.
they have a min weight so it pays to get all y9ou items in to them at once. as far as i know they don't galv used chassis any more. our local one will not drill or work on any part that you drop off but will refuse to dip it if it doesn't have enough suitable sized holes. price wise it varies so much on whats dipped. eg we had some axles done and after blasting de-greasing and galv we then had to spent hours drilling and tapping out the holes. you can leave bolts in to keep the threads clean but they will often snap when you try to remove them. Good to hear. I know they wanted to know weight last time and qty of items.
That was a stumbling block because I couldn’t do that, as didn’t have temporary spare parts to fit at that time. I think they said 6mm holes in enclosed tubing or box section to prevent any explosions! And as mentioned any threaded holes etc need re-tapping etc too. In my case other than roof bars that isn’t an issue. I’m thinking for my items about £100 - £140 but I really have no idea. Better that than losing one items to corrosion though. Maintenance to keep it at bay is a real pain. I don’t mind the chassis but the rest is damned awkward to keep on top of. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

Remember that the cost of galvanising is usually based on the difference in weight before and after (ie the weight of added zinc) and bear this in mind when drilling your holes. If you have something like a rock slider, and the holes allows the tube to fill with with zinc and not drain, expect to pay a very considerable price for the hundredweight or so of zinc that has taken residence in your tube!

Indeed, I think that’s why they specify a certain hole size minimum to drill. And then bearing in mind structural integrity.
Most tubing is open with caps, but not all tubing and box section. I know they said it was critically important and weight before being quoted for. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

i think the min weight near us is 100kg but we're always over that.
spend a good sum on new drill bits and decent tap and dies and you will be fine plus some nice cutting oil will keep the drill bits sharper longer |

I would recommend Cardiff Galvanisers any day of the week, but would not go near Crediton with a barge pole ......
I had bad reports about Crediton, but nothing but recommends for Cardiff, based on the company that I work for and colleagues and neighbours that I have spoken to. As soon as Crediton know they are Land Rover parts the price rockets, the bulkhead on its own was quoted at £150+VAT, with £10+VAT for each additional item. So all the bits I had to get done was going to cost me close to £300 plus VAT plus a signed disclaimer that if they bent it, it would be nothing to do with them. One friend had his defender roof rack galvanised and was quoted a price per kilo which then more than trebled after it had been done because "its from a Land Rover". My boss had his garden railings bent because they picked them up by the skinny spindles rather than the much stronger top or bottom rails. The finish on the galvanising we have done at work looks like its full of grit, ideal it you want a non skid surface but not if you want to paint it. Cardiff on the other hand couldn't be more helpful and charged a flat fee of £80+VAT for the first 100kg and 80p+VAT per kg after that (prices as of April 2017). Bulkheads were no problem as "we do them all the time and don't have any issues". They could do the whole lot in a day providing it was ready to be galvanised and didn't need any basting or further preparation. The job was booked in for a friday and I had to drop the items off soon after they opened at 8:00 am. The preceeding week was spent with the garage converted into a blast booth to make sure all was ready, the car was loaded with the bulkhead, 2 door frames, bonnet frame, cooling pack frame, and all of the associated mounting brackets. I left Cornwall at 5am for the drive to Cardiff, booked the items in and spent a day sightseeing including visiting Cardiff Castle. I rang just after 1 to get a progress report and was told "It's all done and waiting for you". At 68kg completed you can work out how much it cost, even when you take into account the day out in Cardiff and the extra fuel cost, it was still cheaper than going to Crediton. Did it warp when it was galvanised? No, it was as straight as it was when I delivered it. If I need to get anything else galvanised, it'll be another trip to Wales. For powder coating, I would use Hadley Powder Coatings in Plymouth. They can powder coat, shot blast and wet paint. My A bar still looks like new after 5 years, satin black powder over blasted steel (no galvanise). Hope that helps Paul |

Slightly different question - would the guys who have galvanised parts before recommend it? I have a new Series 3 chassis - the standard answer is to galvanise it to make it last, is there anything else out there that does a good job that isn't galvanising? My hesitation to galv is getting it to a galvaniser, the cost and the fact that I will be welding engine mounts on at a rolling chassis stage, then having to strip back to chassis and send for galvansing. If I could use something that had similar rust inhibiter properties that could be done here instead? If everyone says Galv is the best way, that is what I shall do.

I did all body cappings, bumper, wheel brace and starting handle. £25 pounds min order (in 1984...)
Land-Rover equivalent of chrome plating! Certainly recommend it... Ex scottish & southern 110 Td5 van (shed) with PTO driven winch (L-R special vehicles) Before that, Disco 1, Freelander 1, 26105382 80" with a 1600cc (not much slower) |
