Just got back from 10 days in Japan for the RWC. An epic trip in a simply wonderful country. If you have never been, and have the chance to go, I would highly, highly recommend it. Beautiful country, amazing history, wonderful people, exceptional food, outstanding period buildings, efficient, clean, friendly. And, honestly, not as expensive as is often mentioned.
Typhoon Night, Tokyo shut down apart from some of the small bars in Shinjuku. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Amazing food: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge And alcohol, including a visit to the Kirin distillery and a Japanese ‘take away’: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Beautiful gardens and shrines: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge A very sobering day out (the clock shows the days since the Hiroshima bomb was dropped and the days of the last nuclear bomb test. Still not learning. Guess the country that tested it....): Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Can’t forget the ‘team’: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Look away now if you’re Scottish, Irish or Aussie: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Humour: Click image to enlarge Met some players: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Planes (landing at the leading edge of a Typhoon), trains (fastest we clocked was 200mph), and automobiles. I love my rugby, and as the first Tier 2 nation to host the tournament I really wanted to go. But even if the tournament hadn’t been on, and you’d offered me a ticket anywhere in the world, from a culture/country/people point of view, I’d still have done Japan. This trip was helped by three of the group having lived there, one (Japanese) still living there and the main organiser, a buddy of mine of 35 years vintage, being married to a Japanese wife whom he met when over there in the 90s. So between us, lots of contacts, ideas, guides, help, linguists etc to make it all the more special. And the Japanese are beyond helpful and friendly. Especially with us cutting around in our tour tops. Lots of requests for group photos by Japanese fans and locals alike. And as for the Jap v Sco match, it’s hard to convey the atmosphere both during the match and after the match. And done with passion and grace. No a-holes, no anger, no drunkards, no tension. Absolutely brilliant night out. Monsieur Le Grenadier

Great work. Echo all of that. I went to Tokyo a couple of years ago with work and loved it- friendly, helpful people, lovely clean city, awesome trains and some cracking bars! I brought back a Blossoms top for my son, who has just grown into it!

I'm half Scottish (and typing from Scotland), but was cheering or Japan when they played Scotland.
Now we just need to expel Italy from the 6 nations and invite 2nd tier nationas like Japan as guests each year. |
