Excuse my ignorance, which manifests itself in many ways, but I thought the TD5 had a 36 spline steering wheel.
Apologies if being stupid again. 1983 Series 3 Pick up in Marine Blue 1967 Morris Traveller 1966 Morris Convertible 2012 VW T5 Camper Quod Abundat Non Obstat. |

If it’s a genuine factory Td5 XS it would have been built with a 36 spline column as the XS was a posher CSW 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

The half posh td5 county csw has 36 spline too
For anoraks all around that chart is wrong too as the base spec 2015MY was fitted with the D type wheel with DSC. |

Can't explain the why, but it's a late model TD5, XS spec from the factory and is definitely a 48 spline not a 36 wheel Is there such a thing as too many Defenders?....

It's more likely that LR just used whatever they had to hand when building it. There have been lots of reported instances where the number of splines don't match that chart, which is why the usual advice is to physically count them rather than relying on what should have been. Darren

A non Station wagon Td5 (soft top, pick up, van sides) would have had a 48 spline and a flat wheel.
As the OP’s 110 had an aftermarket wheel on it there’s a chance the wrong one was bought by whoever fitted it and the column was changed! Even Defender production wasn’t really a case of “fit whatever is at hand”. The two different splined columns were for the two different style steering wheels. Although there was a batch of non-leather station wagon (lumpy) wheels that ended up on XS Pumas, I’m not sure that standard production station wagons would have ended up with the flat Tdi-type wheel (excepting special builds etc) just for the sake of “using what’s to hand”. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

Except that the leather-clad XS wheel was available in both 36 and 48 spline versions, which makes it entirely possible in this particular case. Anyway, experience tells us that something must have happened. There are two people in this thread alone that have the 'wrong' number of splines on their wheel. There may, of course, have actually been a plan within LR that explains this but regardless, there are numerous vehicles running around with a different steering column than the table above suggests. They can't all have had their columns replaced. Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? The lumpy wheel only became 48 spline midway through 2008MY production when the 36 spline column was stopped and all Defenders went over to 48 spline.
At the time a Td5 XS was built the wheel fitted was only available in a 36 spline version. Anyway, it's all a mystery. My research and the resulting table from my old site is a very good starting point for what should be fitted, but who knows what's happened after any Defender left the factory 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |
