Ultimately it will depend on the insurer. Churchill noted that I have fitted Boost Alloys, but it did not alter the premium.

Why reluctantly? At least you will know by declaring them that should you need to make a claim or another driver needs to make a claim against you that you will be insured 2015 HT XS 90

I would never risk any mods without notifying the insurance company. In my experience with A-Plan none of my mods have changed the policy premium. Good luck James

some companies just see extra mods as a cash cow or won't even entertain at all |

I’ve insured mine that has no mechanical mods (engine tuning basically but a bigger inter cooler would count too) but was converted from a Hard Top to a stationwagon, a galvanised chassis, Zu wheels, winch and winch bumper added with Land Rover Insurance and now with NFU Mutual - neither hiked the premium but did charge for new paperwork when I notified them of the changes on an existing policy and I had to declare in writing that the engine had not been modified to produce more power. When I changed the steering wheel from OEM to an Optimil removable one NFU told me I didn’t need to notify them of that, but that because I had I now have to make sure that whenever I park up I take the steering wheel off and put the boss cover on! I had to take the Defender into the local office for their motor engineer to see it as he has a Defender and was intrigued to see it! I've got a winch bumper, winch, raised air intake, conversion from CSW to USW, seats from an L322 instead of Defender seats, two locking diffs, different transfer box ratio. When spoke with my broker at A-Plan and declared the L322 seats and locking diffs they said no charge, just the £12 admin fee to update documents.
I asked out of curiosity what would affect the premium? Um, maybe putting an LS3 in it but probably only by a few tens of pounds . Ed 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |

OK I overcame my fear and called first thing , Boost alloys computer said ok , spots computer said NO , So off she went to declare side bars , moto-lita s/wheel , spots . Came back very quickly insurer happy but premium would be extra £15 per year . So all ammended .
Previously I went from 3 to 7 seats and no extra charge for that , as long as lap belts fitted in rear side seats . Another company wanted extra £80 this year and everyyear it would increase i guess , But no belts required . But as I was not sure about the police's view on belts , I opted to fit lap belts . Next years renewal i may go with no belts required option . As it appears they are not legally required . Just to update everyone and thanks for you help and advice , gerry |

Gerry I understand your worries on insurance premiums but imagine having an accident, god forbid injuring someone seriously and not being insured, i dont know your age, circumstances etc but imagining losing everything if they took you to court.... on a happier note glad you got it alsorted 2015 HT XS 90 2008 SVX 90 2000 XS TD5 90 |

I knew it had to be done after reading bits on here , I just needed to clarify a few things . Before I never gave it a thought that spotlights and boost alloys would effect the insurance .
I could not of driven it unless I got it sorted out , A old defender is just a lump of metal , but if some poor kid got injured by it and not been insured . Not something I could live with . But the amount of defenders you see on the roads with this and that different from stock , How many have declared everything . Just thought its got a snorkel , dam it best call them back . |

Snorkel now added , insurer is SABRE Just in case anyone needs to know who and a guide to how much to pay .£345 fully comp protected no claims , + the extra £15 for

The problem with fitting all these things isn’t the increase in its performance off-road, adding lots of “trim” like sidesteps, spotlights and RAI/Snorkel all, in the eyes of insurance companies, make your car more desirable to thieves. I understand the why they do , But is it a valid reason . Lad on another forum think he meant lift kit , braided lines , wheels tyres , lights £2000 . don't know his age , but a member for 7 years so i assume minimum age 24 . £250 no mods breakdown cover legal aid etc .
Same other forum a lads brother his modded 90 full comp £120 . ..I'm paying £360 , that's what I don't get . Mine was £345 un-modded full no claims 60 , no points . , another lad 9 points 200tdi.swap from 2.5TD. Commercial to county forward seats , windscreen legal, breakdown , no alarm or anything £300 full comp aged 40 . So even with mods or without there's such a vast difference in prices .
