4th Service 2015 90 XS
Hi All,

So my 90 is coming up for its 4th service and I am looking at service options/cost. Since the 1st service I havent been to the LR dealer as I have found a local LR specialist who does the work a lot cheaper than LR. The specialist says they only offer A or B service and this year my car would be due for a B service however I have only covered 1000 miles since the last service. From what I gather the only differences in the B service are fuel filter/air filter and full brake inspection (wheels off) on top of the engine/oil and pollen filter. So my question is given the low mileage I've done am I better off just getting another A service? The specialist says they normally grease any joints etc anyway so I cant see the point of spending £200 more to get the B service. What are your thoughts?

Thanks

B service also includes oil change for the diffs and transfer box. I also do very low mileage (2-3K a year) but always stick with the manufacturer-recommended service schedule.

For the sake of peace of mind I'd personally go with the B service as oils pick up moisture over time 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone
2002 - Black Discovery II - Gone
2014 - Montalcino Red 110 XS SW

I was in a similar situation recently, 2015 Landmark 90 with 7800 miles from new. Decided to bite the bullet and go with the full B service from a main dealer.

I'd just oil change it myself

I still alternate mine. I do around 6k miles per year.

One year an oil / filter change (plus greasing the props etc)
2nd year, full monty, air filter, fuel filter, all oils (transfer box, diffs, gbox).
Probably overdue bleeding the clutch. Did the brakes this year but clutch not done for a while now... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

I would just service this, your self. That way you know its been done. I have heard a couple of stories that dealers don't touch the car if it doesn't need a service and still charge you. The full amount!
One of my work mates, told me a story about her auntie. Her auntie kept taking her car in to the dealers for service.
Her auntie spoke to my work mates dad about somthing, he marked the parts on the car, it went into the service. Sure enough they didnt even touch it. But charged her for the job.
My work mates dad had a right go at the dealers before the car even left the dealer ship. her auntie got her money back and that was it! The car never went back there again. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Procta, marking the consumables before going for a service is a sure fire way of really upsetting the garage. Most mechs know what to look for. It's a bit like your boss setting a CCTV camera up on your workstation to keep an eye on what you are doing at work (although this seems to be getting the norm for some people these days).

There are always going to be stories of garages (and lots of other places come to that) not doing what you pay them to do.

I work in the construction industry and it makes me cringe every time Rogue Traders / Watchdog etc. etc. show another film of a 'trades person' ripping Joe Public off. I hope that doesn't make the viewing public believe that every trades person is out to rip them off?

You have to trust someone in life? Garages, as with all other service providers, are best chosen from recommendations by people you know and can trust.

Personally, I find the hassle of self servicing and then disposing of the oil and bits afterwards more hassle than taking it to someone who has the ramps and kit to make the job easier, but I suppose for peace of mind, doing it yourself does mean you get it done when you want it done and how you want it done.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'd actually failed to realize that B service covers things like diffs and transfer box etc so I think I shall bite the bullet and go for a B service. I really dont fancy doing it myself in this weather and getting all mucky on the drive etc so I'd rather get the specialist to do this. They also have the ability to update the LR online service record which for me is also worth to keep the car and records nice and tidy.

Thanks

You know they did something, when you discover they left their tools behind...
I found this wrench on the brakes after driving the Def home 15 miles after having it serviced Evil or Very Mad

I was rather angry at my „premium“ dealer...
