Transmission to support bar bolt missing!
Keep forgetting to ask this but it appears a bolt should go through the chassis support bar up into the transmission or don't they have one!? Thanks

There is no bolt in the support bar.

Quite a few posts on here about it.

Here is one.

This question was asked by AndrewS the other day when we went on the LR factory tour. LR themselves didnt seem to know what the hole was for!

Am SO glad I am not the only person to think something else had dropped off, noticed the (perfectly aligned) holes last weekend and thought 'sh*t'. Think we may have stumbled upon a new medical condition.... Puma Paranoia

I own a 2007 Puma and 2010 Ford Transit. The gearbox in the Transit is similar to the MT82. It has a mount block fitted in a similar postion which is bolted to a transmission support cross member of the Transit. This supports the rear of the transmission.

I think the bolt pattern on the Puma gearbox is just left over and obviously not used like it is on the Transit. The transmission mounts on the Puma are either side of the transfer case which is bolted additionally to the gearbox, hence the bolt hole mount is unused in the middle of a Puma box whereas it is near the end of a Transit box and is used to support the box.

Problem solved. Smile

P.S. Pumas and Transits rule!

This site is great, was out under my 90 tonight looking at the sump wondering would I be able to get LR to swap it for the re-designed sump, just a bit worried about it taking a hit from the UJ, When I noticed this "missing bolt on the transmission"
Came in did a search, nothing to worry about Smile
Happy days.

ergo: the some parts of the Puma chassis are from the Transit Shocked Puma 110" SW

has anybody looked in the special tools list?

I don't have dgardels lovely workshop manual pdf with me at work, but my assumption for this was that it was a support for the g-box when the engine was taken out.

However, as the saying goes, assume make an ass out of you and me.

Not necessarily, it may be a CAD artefact from the importation of the gearbox into the Puma design.

The Transit cross member and the Puma cross member are different so no carry over on this part and can't see any other similar chassis parts so mainly engine and gearbox similarlties in this case, although these would be modified for use in the Defender.
I suppose the point of my post was to let everyone know that there is no bolt that is meant to pass through the cross member to the gearbox on the Defender but the bolt mounting point is used on vehicles such as the Transit. It might be used for support for major work involving transfer case removal etc. on the Defender or alignment for the original machining of the gearbox casing in the CNC machining centres. Don't know. What I do know is nothing is missing although it looks strange from underneath and you think something should be there. Smile
