Thanks I hadn't seen that.

1.2 ratio, 6th gear @ 80mph = 2593rpm
1.1 ratio, 6th gear @ 80mph = 2356rpm
-237rpm difference.

1.2 ratio, 1st gear @ 10mph = 2378rpm
1.1 ratio, 1st gear @ 10mph = 2160rpm
-218rpm difference.

Worth it?

Now workout the theoretical fuel saving based on the reduced RPM.... 1999 Defender TD5 110

Yeah I hear you, but for me it's not so much about fuel savings as for drivability > 110 XS Double Cab

Gear ratios, particularly at motorway speeds, are largely irrelevant for fuel consumption. About a year ago I did work out all the maths and pretty much all of the 100+hp of a Defender engine is going into overcoming aerodynamic losses. The only significant way you're going to change mpg is by dropping your cruising speed. Ed

Our 2.2 110 and Td5 90 both have the 1.2 ratio. The 110 has an Alive Stage 1 map, 235/85/r16 tyres, an AluCab conversion, AluCab 270 awning, 2x 55L auxiliary tanks, and a full length roof rack. When fully loaded it still drives nicely with the 1.2 ratio. It spends a lot of its life in the Alps and the hills aren’t a problem. The Td5 has 285/75/r16 tyres and a Td5inside map. It’s a lot lighter than the 110 but the higher gearing of the 1.2 just makes it a bit quieter on the motorway and town driving is fine. I can still get 5th gear just before 30mph. Charlie

O/T...

I changed the timing belt on my 200Tdi years back... a while after the crank snapped on that.

turns out I'd refitted the pump and the timing was 180 degrees out. It ran perfectly, maybe slightly more knock, but not much.

I figure there was a LOT of stress on the crank due to it firing at the wrong time which caused it to break.
