DEFENDER PUMA ENJIN NOISE

I have a Defender 1998 model with 2.4 Puma enjin. She developed a "knocking" noise esp when idling.
At first the mechanic thought it was the Injectors. Injectors tips were replaced. Enjin smooth running test was done, which was normal. injectors checked for second time and were working normally.
Then they found that one of the lifters was bent and slipped off. This was replaced. Unfortunately still no improvement in the noise. I have done nearly 5000km with this noise. Car pulls well.
Now they want to open the top.
Anyone with advice?
