Do it yourself tints?
It is worth it...

Left it late for holiday to get it booked in...had the car over 3 years so it's no a huge issue.

Just watched a you tube clip looks very easy with squidgy & soapy water.... The film I can buy pre cut for the windows..

I'm worried about bubbles and looking naff.. however the you tube clip looked great and was with cheap Chinese film.

Anyone done it?

Probably easier to do on a Defender than a modern car due to the flat glass.

Tried to do the rear screen on an Astra Van which curved in every direction. Absolutely impossible.

I suppose it also makes a difference on the quality of the film you use. I expect my ex-boss only bought the cheapest Rolling Eyes

You could try getting everyone in the truck to put a pair of stockings over their heads, it has the same effect if you get the right denier......

Guaranteed to impress customs officers and the police as you drive down the road Rolling with laughter

I have tinted a few cars in my younger days and ended up being quite good at it, but still have nightmares about an astra van rear window. The problem doing a defender is the overlap of glass on a 90. Now I would let the experts do it rather than do it myself, if you do want to have a try use lots and lots of water Thumbs Up 2015 HT XS 90

Sulisuli, would you add a drop of fairy liquid with the water?

Had a friend who used to put decals on trucks and vans. He always used a drop of the Fairy his spray bottle (just a drop, not too much or it ends up an Ibiza foam party). I wondered if the same would work for tint film?

One of my mates had his done professionally, and they removed the windows from the door to make the job easier and better.

I should imagine the alpine windows will be a bit of a challenge?

I'd be inclined to get it done professionally.

Also bear in mind it can scratch easily, but equally can be replaced. TheThunder Rolls🇬🇧🇺🇸

You can get a small roll from Halfrauds for c£15.....

..Buy that and give it a go then draw your own conclusions, however at that point you'll want to strip off the first lot (use a hairdryer to help) and reapply with experience gained!

If you do go for it then use as much soapy water as possible to slide the film around and centre it, then remove as much as possible from the middle of the window before tidying up the edges or it will move and ruin everything!
Rear window, quarter lights and alpine windows will all be easier if you remove them first, use them to practice your edges before moving onto the harder windows that will be done in situ.

My misses did my rear windows last weekend to keep all my work gear away from prying eyes. I'm really happy with it although it does look amateurish. If you're after a professional finish, pay the professionals. Mine cost about a tenner and a cup of tea. Thumbs Up

The real skill to this is not getting creases or air bubbles, if you have to peel the film back and then reapply that’s when it can crease and if you need to do this add lots of soapy water a small gardener sprayer bottle is perfect for this. 2015 HT XS 90

I did my rear window. It took a couple of attempts but wasn't too tricky. I sprayed the window with soapy water and precut the film so it was an inch bigger than I needed.

Getting it in place without bubbles isn't difficult on the rear window. Trimming it to the right side and tucking the film under the window seal is a little harder. I'd recommend a soft rubber squeegee (otherwise you'll leave scratches on the film) and using several scalpels as it can tear when they get blunt.

The alpine windows are an absolute nightmare... I tried several times and eventually gave up. Have bought new scalpels to try and make it a bit easier.

A rubber spatula from the kitchen draw is a useful item when trying to tuck the film close to the rubber seals and a credit card with a cloth wrapped round it is useful for tight spaces without scratching the film when trying to get that last annoying bubble out Thumbs Up 2015 HT XS 90
