Series One Recommission
For those of you who like a bit of Series One content, here are a few photos of my recently recommissioned 1953 80in.
It’s an ex Australian vehicle, one farming family owned from new and was only recently taken off farm work. It had the quite typical Holden 6 cylinder engine however the original seized engine along with a few other parts were in the back of the vehicle. I wasn’t really looking for another 80in but this one was so original with faded/ worn paintwork, all original mechanical parts it warranted a second look. The clincher for me was that it was assembled in Australia the same month and year I was born.

Stripping down.

Original engine in the rear tub.

To fit the Holden engine the second cross member had been carved up somewhat.

Engine and gearbox going back in

The bulkhead was in exceptionally good condition owing to spending over 60 years in a dry climate.

The chassis also was really good with a lot of the original green paint still intact. The second cross member was refabricated by a mate who is an excellent fabricator.

Getting it back together with bulkhead refitted.

Starting to look more like a Land Rover again.

A nicely worn canvas was from a Series One Club member.

So after around a year my Birthday 80in was ready for the road. It won’t be used for going far as my back won’t stand long trips in a Series One anymore but for a tootle around the lanes and the odd classic car/ Land Rover show it will be just fine.

Perfect! All original, structurally and mechanical sound but with it's 'life' retained and left on show.

Fantastic restoration. Great to see the original panels unrestored. Have you given it a coat of clear to keep preserve them or just going to let nature take its course?

The panels had some functional repairs, welding in aluminium where there were fractures etc. It will just get a wipe over with ACF50 now and again. Most of the paint on the top surfaces like the wings and bonnet is none existent, a wipe with ACF50 seems to keep the oxidation at bay.
