2003 TD5 service oil question.
I’m about to oil service the TD5. Are the gearbox oils topped up to the level of the fill plug or is it a measured amount in the gearbox, transfer box and diffs?

What oil types go where?

Thanks 👍 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Hi mate.

All oils on the Td5 are filled to the filler plug level. Obviously apart from the engine.

This is the oils I bought for my Td5

Motul oil is trans box
Red line G box
Fuchs Titan diffs

You can go cheaper, but these were the best according to Opie oils.

Thanks Andy. Good info. I’ve never serviced the Defender before, always sent it to local independent garage.

Hope your all well. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Gareth there is nothing too it, just take your time and if you need confirmation just shout.

A few tips:

When it comes to the main oil filter it is much easier to buy the filter tool and filter to fit. Makes getting a good seal easy and when you come to the next service the filter will be easy to get off.

The R380 main gearbox plug is a Torx bit. Make sure you have the right one.

The centrifugal oil filter is a bit fiddly to get to, but made easier with a 1/4" ratchet and extensions. When doing up the two bolts do not over tighten, just until tight is enough.

If the service history is a bit sketchy then it might be worth sticking some engine oil flush (wyns or other) through before draining the old oil. Makes sure all those oil ways are good and clean.

In my experience always buy the LR filters, they just fit better. This is especially so for the air filter and the centrifugal filter.

If when you drain your front axle the oil comes out a metallic grey it is likely that your half shift seal(s) are allowing CV grease to by-pass and mix with the EP axle oil. It is not a problem, but it'd be worth getting a couple of one shot grease sachets just in case you need to top the CV grease up. At some point you will have to replace the swivel balls and this is the time to sort that seal out.

Whilst you are down there find your axle and gearbox breathers and make sure they are not blocked. Easiest way is to blow down them before you change the oil. Do not use compressed air your lungs will do.

Sensors: Buy a tin of spray electronics contact cleaner and clean each sensor whilst you are waiting for the oil to drain.

Great fun job to do on a day off... Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

A handy tip to remember for the earlier R380 drain is that a viscous fan spanner fits nicely on it too. 32mm spanner is larger than most normal enthusiast tool sets. A 32mm socket will not fit on the drain either.

Absolutely right about the old skool viscous spanner Thumbs Up

It is also an 1" 1/4 spanner. Oddly found it easier to get one of these than a 32mm spanner...

All done today. Dead easy. Hardest bit was getting the cover off the fuel filter housing. That had been there a long time.

All oils from the axles and main gearbox came out clean and clear. The transfer box was a little milky and grey. The magnetic plugs had an amount of great powdery metallic paste stuck to them, but no big bits and I’m comfortable that it’s normal with the mileage.

Thanks for the encouragement. Didn’t spill much either! 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Yes it did. The last time it had a full service which included that was about 3 years ago.

In fact I’m a bit lax about the oils, the engine oil and filters gets done every year, but the gearbox and axles etc have not been changed since 48k miles when I first got the car 7 years ago. Now it’s on 81k. So probably overdue for changing. However, like I said, the oils were clear and it only gets light use and no off road or wading. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV
