 2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 USW Stornoway Grey
Lof clutches
Soft top clutch has a slight rattle, so what's the verdict on going for something like lof clutch over a std one. What are the differences, advantages? Cheers

It’s not so much the advantages of LOF (or Clutchfix for that matter) as avoiding the complete garbage that is the standard clutch. The springs on a standard one are too weak, they get squashed, rattle like hell then eventually fall out. Mine are in the rattling like hell phase at the minute. I’ll go with either LOF or Clutchfix before my next big trip, but I don’t really have a preference for one over the other. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I have had a power-spec clutch from LOF for the better part of 18 months now, Probably covered somewhere near 14,000 miles. I bought it because the Valeo clutch I fitted 18 months earlier had begun to slip, especially on steep hills or slip roads when accelerating. I went through all the usual possible reasons for the slipping, including having a remapped ECU, oil contamination, coolant contamination... It got pretty alarming near the end so I was ready to try something uprated...!

As my flywheel was only 18 months old Luke advised that continuing to use it would be alright but to take it easy for 500 miles or so to let the fly and plate to bed in together and whilst doing so to "take it easy" on the go pedal. This was probably the most agonising but relaxing 800ish miles I have driven in ages.

Luke was right and the "mating process" was entirely successful Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Since that point the clutch has performed brilliantly with not a trace of slipping and allowing all the horses (that have not fled the stable in 200+k miles) to get their hooves down. UP hill, down dale, loaded up to the gunnels, on and off road...

The only thing to mention is that the clutch pedal is now marginally heavier than with the original Valeo setup. It is not obtrusive and you quickly get used to it. The addition of the clutch spring helps with this though...

Apart from that the actual difference between the quality of workmanship between the Valeo and LOF units really cannot be compared, it'd be like comparing a cave matured cheddar with squeezey cheese from a can... Everything is made better but it does the same job. Plus I liked the massively uprated release bearing and clutch fork retaining clip.

All in all I am a very happy Defender owner and am equally happy to recommend the product and service from Luke at LOF.

Big thumbs up for Luke at LOF. Just fitted one of his clutch kits and at the same time replaced the output shaft. Felt for an extra hundred quid it was worth future-proofing it. His kit included oil seal, release bearings etc. The new clutch is lighter and so far spot on. Also great customer service.

Another option, one favoured by respected forum member dgardel, is the 4x4 Transit clutch. Much better apparently that the LR version.

I run a good stage 2 map from Alive on my Road Spec LOF clutch. It’s handled everything I’ve thrown at it so far.

Very spirited driving up and down the hilly A30, a ton of concrete or soil in the pick up. Feels nice on the clutch pedal and doesn’t rattle!

Luke’s a top guy as well and will gladly chat to you about what you want and need, he actually talked me out of buying the power spec one as he said the Road spec is incredibly strong. Saved me some money too! 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html

Probably close to 20-25k miles now JST with a strong IRB Developments map. All good.


The same cannot be said for the reconditioned transfer box fitted in January Whistle Rolling Eyes

I have had a LOF clutch kit fitted a few months back now, it was the one up from std spec if I remember correctly,
As mentioned above I took it VERY easy on the throttle for 1500 miles ( they say 1000)
Also had a flywheel

Got to say it's fine to drive now without a sniff of clutch slip,
My 90 runs a big remap from IRB, big inter cooler and D2 gearing,
After fitting three different clutches in about 2 years I'm happy with the results

Works for me Thumbs Up
